bbordwell, No this is not screen locking. This was a bug that appeared with the lastest release of the Linux Kernel. The updates were applied but the system was not reboot bu the system updater. Athough I 'restarted' the computer the issues did not disappear. Once I 'powered off' then repowered the machine, the problems disappeared. I have established an policy that any update mentioning the kernal or other system files I totally reboot the machine immediately after the install is finished (i.e. power off and on). I think what you are describing is the the screen being locked.
