I've verified that this is fixed in hardy (8.04), jaunty (9.04), and
karmic, the current development release. Marking as Fix Released.

It may be more that there is little need to know the initial process's
pid, since unlike the children, you don't need to "find its place in the
order of things".

Regardless, it doesn't match documentation, so either the docs or the
behavior ought to be fixed.
