Your g-p-m log suggests that there is no hardware capable of brightness control on your system. Do the brightness hotkeys on your keyboard (rather than the slider in the brightness applet) normally work ok? If I kill g-p-m the applet changes to red solid and hovering on it indicates "can't connect to gnome-power-manager". That's strange. It doesn't look like gnome-power-manager is controlling brightness at all, even before suspend. Could you please run "killall gnome- power-manager && gnome-power-manager --verbose 2>&1 | tee gpm.log", then try suspending and resuming, and then adjusting your brightness again.
