[Bug 545096] Re: [lucid][R500 X1400] intermitent screen corruption (pink world ) - regression from -20 to -21 kernel
Lionel Dricot, this bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? If so, could you please test for this with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/ . If it remains an issue, could you please run the following command in the development release from a Terminal (Applications-Accessories-Terminal), as it will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report: apport-collect -p linux replace-with-bug-number Also, could you please test the latest upstream kernel available following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds ? It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Please do not test the daily folder, but the one all the way at the bottom. Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please comment on which kernel version specifically you tested. If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tags: kernel-fixed-upstream kernel-fixed-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER where VERSION-NUMBER is the version number of the kernel you tested. For example: kernel-fixed-upstream-v3.11 This can be done by clicking on the yellow circle with a black pencil icon next to the word Tags located at the bottom of the bug description. As well, please remove the tag: needs-upstream-testing If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the following tags: kernel-bug-exists-upstream kernel-bug-exists-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER As well, please remove the tag: needs-upstream-testing Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug's Status as Confirmed. Please let us know your results. Thank you for your understanding. ** Changed in: linux (Ubuntu) Status: Triaged = Incomplete ** Attachment removed: Screenshot.jpg https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/545096/+attachment/1749694/+files/Screenshot.jpg ** Attachment removed: corruption.tar.gz https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/545096/+attachment/1456755/+files/corruption.tar.gz ** Attachment removed: Corruption Bug (see at the terminal border) https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/545096/+attachment/1418948/+files/IMAGE_011.jpg -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/545096 Title: [lucid][R500 X1400] intermitent screen corruption (pink world ) - regression from -20 to -21 kernel To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/xserver-xorg-driver-ati/+bug/545096/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 545096] Re: [lucid][R500 X1400] intermitent screen corruption (pink world ) - regression from -20 to -21 kernel
I got an ATI x1400 mobility radeon as well, using a ThinkPad T60. (german bug dscription here: http://forum.ubuntuusers.de/post/2472883/ ) 1. the overall GPU performance is worse on lucid, then on karmic - on both kernels so far. for example, I get 40 fps less in quake live, and 50 fps less in openarena, when comparing performance under karmic, with performance under lucid (using exactly the same hardware and settings, of course). 2. often, the colors go wild. and parts of the screen flicker in pink and green - 3d applications definitely cause this, but it also happens seemingly at random when only using office programs. failed attempts to solve this: - disabling KMS didn't help - the radeonHD driver didn't do any good - I waited for a kernal update (2.6.32-22) - the proprietary driver from ATI ( http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/linux/legacy/Pages/radeon_linux.aspx?type=2.4.2product=2.4.2.3.9lang=usrev=9.3ostype=Linux%20x86 ) does not support the X.Org 7.5 of lucid, because support was dropped from ATI since X.Org 7.4. -- so by now I simply installed karmic again, everything works fine there (with the normal radeon driver). -- [lucid][R500 X1400] intermitent screen corruption (pink world ) - regression from -20 to -21 kernel https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/545096 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Something similar was triggered yesterday on my Lenovo Thinkpad R60, having an ATI X1400 graphics system - this started when using the game battle tanks. The GPU temperature rose quickly to above 70 degrees. The problem did not stop even after quitting the game, but the GPU temperature was reduced to 62-63 degrees C. Symptoms: The display became over-exposed at the edges, approximately 2-3 cm, flickering and some overall noise/bright spots. The whole computer was slowing down/locking completely at times. Temperature reading for the CPU was at 59 degrees C. The fan speed was at medium all the time at around 2700 rpm. Further details: Ubuntu Lucid Lynx amd64 kernel, updated as of 25 April. [Bug 545096] Re: [lucid][R500 X1400] intermitent screen corruption (pink world ) - regression from -20 to -21 kernel
I was able to reproduce that bug with -21 kernel but it seems a lot less frequent. So, to summarize, this is what happens: There are four possible situations : 1) Everything is smooth and fine. 2) Splash screen is ugly but everything is fine once logged (not a real problem) 3) Normal session with backlight flickering. This starts immediatly at login and appears randomly during the whole session. This is a bit annoying but a bit subtle and you can work with it the whole day (if you are in a bright room. A bit more annoying in darker places). 4) Pink world. Heavy corruptions with freezes. This is appears randomly during the session but starts only after at least 4 or 5 minutes. This make it impossible to work with the computer but also impossible to know if you will hit the bug or not.. It has to be noted that those 4 situations are mutually exclusives. It means that if I have an ugly splash screen, I'm sure I will not have any corruption. Also, as soon as I see backlight flickering, I know I will not have any Pink World ! * With normal boot (-21 kernel) : - 50% of the time, everything is fine and smooth (1) - 40% of the time, backlight flickering (3) - 10% of the time, pink world (4) * With normal boot (-20 kernel) : - 80% of the time, pink world (4) - 20% of the time, (3) * With nomodeset (any known kernel): - 100% of the time, everything work but splashscreen (2) -- [lucid][R500 X1400] intermitent screen corruption (pink world ) - regression from -20 to -21 kernel https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/545096 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
