For me too, with maverick it opens a new Firefox window instead of a new
tab (as set in the Firefox preferences). The option in preferred
applications was on Open the link with the the default web browser.
Tested applications : Software-center, Transmission, and Openoffice.org

An exception : Firefox open a new tab as set in its option : well done!

To have the links opened in a new tab for the other applications, I have
to choose Open the link in a new tab in the preferred applications
windows.
