I am now on kernel 2.6.32-19-generic-pae. The problem appears to have gone away. Randomly describes this bug perfectly. The laptop can work for hours without an issue, or it can crash after only 2 minutes of usage. Computer does not have a chance to write anything to disk - so it seems impossible to determine the circumstances leading up to the crash.
