[Bug 549645] Re: Summary of sis graphics bugreports

2010-07-06 Thread papukaija
This bug report is a summary of common problems with sis cards in Linus,
so I converted this bug into a question. Please convert/mark it as FAQ.

[Bug 549645] Re: Summary of sis graphics bugreports

2010-06-21 Thread papukaija
Shouldn't this bug report be closed as this is more a more a howto for
common bugs with the sis driver and a dupplicate of multiple bugs?

** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-sis

Since there are several reports on these bugs in xserver-xorg-driver-sis
I give a summary of the reported problems and some of the suggested
solutions. SIS does not provide all required information to make good
drivers for all SIS graphical cards. Hence you might meet problems with
some monitors (resolutions, modes) and you will not get 3D acceleration.

- bug 1: The driver sis available in Ubuntu (Karmic) does not function well for
all SIS graphical cards (e.g. see bugs 523749, 301958, 281454, 291294, etc and
various questions)
- Minor bug 2: In man sis the link
http://www.winischhofer.AT/linuxsisvga.shtml should be replaced by
http://www.winischhofer.net/linuxsisvga.shtml
+ 1: The driver sis available in Ubuntu (Karmic) does not function well
+ for all SIS graphical cards (e.g. see bug 523749, bug 301958, bug
+ 281454, bug 291294, etc and various questions)

+ 2: In man sis the link http://www.winischhofer.AT/linuxsisvga.shtml
+ should be replaced by http://www.winischhofer.net/linuxsisvga.shtml

Discussions on internet, especially Ubuntuforums show that many, sometimes
conflicting, advices are given which seem to work for only part of the users.
The following advices are given:
  - Check http://www.winischhofer.net/linuxsispart1.shtml#12 for supported
SiS/XGI graphics chips and video bridges.

  - Also check what input is used by the monitor. If you have a choice
between analog and digital input you may have to use analog (see tables
on the same link which show that for higher resolutions only analog
works). For that you use a VGA plug (15 pin D-sub). It is found on most
(if not all) machines including laptops for primary VGA output, thus
driven by CRT1. If it is not present you may need a DVI-VGA adapter or
  to remove some pins.

  - It may be necessary to configure /etc/X11/xorg.conf. If you do not have
this file you can generate one with Xorg -configure while gdm is not active. Do
this before installing new drivers and check for modifications after installing
new drivers. Especially the choice of the driver in the Section Device may be
important. E.g.:
  Section Device
- Identifier devname # your device
- Driver sis # or sisimedia or sis671
+  Identifier devname # your device
+  Driver sis # or sisimedia or sis671

  - It may be necessary to reduce Shared Memory in the BIOS (see bug
  291294 https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-
  sis/+bug/291294)

  - If needed, download the drivers sisimedia and/or sis671 from
- http://ncc-1701a.homelinux.net/~linux-sis/index.php?page=Downloads
(Available in Lucid?)
(Available in Lucid?)

  - When you switch monitors it may be needed to completely remove (purge)
one of the sis-drivers and reinstall it and/or to reconfigure xorg.conf
  and/or the BIOS (e.g. see bug 523749).

  - The sisfb module is mentioned also. E.g.(Bug #264769):
  sudo modprobe sisfb
  AND
  edit your xorg.conf
  at:
  Section Device add there an:
  Option UseFBDev true
Another example: add video=sisfb as kernel argument on menu.list and later
grub.cfg (Bug #530554).
- Another example: add sisfb in /etc/modules
+ Another example: add sisfb in /etc/modules

My tip: Before you take any actions read man sis, visit
  http://www.winischhofer.net/linuxsispart1.shtml#12 and
  https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Video, and search ubuntuforums and
launchpad with sis graphics and the name of your version of Ubuntu to
check your method. Remember that tips may not be valid in your case
because the hardware and software configuration of your pc may not be
equal to that of the tipper.

Re: [Bug 549645] Re: Summary of sis graphics bugreports

2010-04-02 Thread Heinvandijk
Please find attached the output of `lspci -vvnn` , and your
/var/log/Xorg.0.log and /etc/X11/xorg.conf

I can not produce a dmesg because this trial was a one time occasion and
i didn't make a copy of that.
I used a VGA-cable and had installed sisimage, sis671 and sisctrl
Later I replaced
Section Device
Identifier Configured Video Device
Driver sis
EndSection
by:
Section Device
Identifier Configured Video Device
Driver sis671
Option EnableSiSCtrl yes
EndSection
Which resulted in some more choice in resolutions but still much to low.

[Bug 549645] Re: Summary of sis graphics bugreports

2010-03-30 Thread Bryce Harrington
Hi Heinvandijk,

Please attach the output of `lspci -vvnn` and `dmesg`, and attach your
/var/log/Xorg.0.log (and maybe Xorg.0.log.old) file from after reproducing this
issue. If you're using a custom /etc/X11/xorg.conf please attach that as well.

[This is an automated message. Apologies if it has reached you
inappropriately; please just reply to this message indicating so.]
