[Bug 552644] Re: Lucid Lynx 64 bit nightly build hangs on boot

2010-04-22 Thread Mathew Hennessy
I just started getting this after updating this morning:
# Xorg.0.log output
(II) LoadModule: fglrx
(WW) Warning, couldn't open module fglrx
(II) UnloadModule: fglrx
(EE) Failed to load module fglrx (module does not exist, 0)
(EE) No drivers available.
# lsmod|grep fglrx
fglrx2353422 0

I've also done an aptitude reinstall fglrx, no luck. In 'low graphics'
mode now.

Sapphire HD 4870 1GB RAM.

[Bug 552644] Re: Lucid Lynx 64 bit nightly build hangs on boot

2010-04-22 Thread Alberto Milone
@Matthew
You're definitely experiencing a different problem. The fglrx package failed to
build the kernel module. Maybe you're missing the headers for your kernel? Hard
to tell without seeing the output of sudo apt-get install --reinstall fglrx

[Bug 552644] Re: Lucid Lynx 64 bit nightly build hangs on boot

2010-04-22 Thread Felix Kuehling
@Alberto, Matthew: I don't think it's a problem with the kernel module.
Matthew's lsmod command actually shows that the kernel module is loaded.
The error messages are from the Xorg log. It's the user-space
fglrx_drv.so that can't be found. Maybe Xorg isn't looking in the right
place for some reason.

@Matthew: It would help if you filed a new bug report including all the
relevant configuration and log files. You can use ubuntu-bug fglrx
from a terminal to compile all the log files automatically.

I'm still seeing the same effect on Acer E360, 32bit Lucid, with the

needed the PC for more urgent things so have reverted to the OSS driver
for now.

Hallelujah! After six weeks of pain, the latest fglrx update tonight
seems to have fixed the problem! For the first time I am finally able
to use my monitor at its proper resolution with accelerated graphics!

I was really getting worried this would never be fixed before Lucid
final release.

[Bug 552644] Re: Lucid Lynx 64 bit nightly build hangs on boot

2010-04-10 Thread earthforce_1
Ok, some very limited progress:

The latest updates at least now let me get to the rescue prompt and
start a safe mode X without having to uninstall fglrx. But fglrx is
obviously not working properly. This is after I blew everything away
and started fresh from a Beta 2 CD, so the there truly is a problem with
fglrx and my GPU, there was no configuration left behind. The desktop
came up fine until I installed the restricted drivers, then everything
goes to hell.

I really, really hope it can be fixed before release.

Before fglrx installation:

$ sudo ls -l /usr/lib/xorg/extra-modules
/usr/lib/xorg/extra-modules - /etc/alternatives/xorg_extra_modules

$ sudo ls -l /usr/lib/xorg/extra-modules/
total 0

At the No proprietary drivers are installed on this system. dialog I
click Activate for the ATI/AMD FGLRX graphics driver which has a grey
bubble next to it and is the only option provided. Dialog in lower
corner says This driver is not activated with grey bubble.

Downloading and installing driver.

Grey bubble in dialog is now replaced with restart circular blue arrow
and dialog You need to restart the computer to activate this driver.

sudo ls -l /usr/lib/xorg/extra-modules/

drwxr-xr-x 5 root root 4096 2010-04-08 19:45 modules

total 9120
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 9337664 2010-03-30 23:28 fglrx_drv.so

Well it looks like it was installed. So I now restart the system

NO JOY - Please see inline paste of

more /var/log/Xorg.0.log
/etc/X11/xorg.conf
/etc/default/grub

following my comments. Posting this from other machine - after fglrx is
installed and the system shut down and restarted, hang on boot with
black screen except for single underline cursor in upper left corner. I
don't know why it showed as being uninstalled before, the other
Xorg.0.log must have been overwritten when the driver was uninstalled.
To be sure that didn't happen this time, I am copy/pasting while the
machine is still up with a hung console.

Regarding Alf's comment: after these logs were pasted, I verified the
power button (not reset) does indeed shut the system down if held in
while the system is in this state.

Ok, I have similar problems with ubuntu amd64 (965 BE/Ati 4890) and new Kernel
2.6.32. Tried out other Distros with 2.6.33 same problems. System hangs on
boot, continues when pressing the power button many times. I think, you should
turn off the splash screen. Next step: Boot and look, where it hangs. Try the
power button. If the system react, try nolapic_timer or similar in the
kernel-line. This fix this for me in Ubuntu, Arch and Sabayon. PS: Trying this
in Arch without X install. This Error is in my opinion not related to fglrx.

2010-04-08 Thread Gary Cameron
Splash screen is now turned off. Still hangs
Comment 8 shows the last things printed to the console when fglrx is installed,
although it got a big munged when I typed it in.

The system boots when fglrx is removed, I just get the low res desktop
warning, then I can get to the login screen and my gnome desktop. (At a
painfully low/wrong resolution)

Haven't tried the nolapic_timer - just add this to the grub invocation
line?

Thanks for your observation - that's interesting, I'm surprised i failed
to notice that - any clue as to why it failed to load? It was installed
in the manner described in comment 12, with no problems reported.

I am sure I also tried a sudo apt-get install fglrx from the bash prompt
as well. Is there some missing dependency? Is there another log file I
should attach that would help diagnose this?

The log file says that the fglrx driver module wasn't found. It should
have been installed in /usr/lib/xorg/extra-

something went wrong during installation.
