I have exactly the same bug. Installed on my laptop (HP/Compaq NX9030 with Intel i855 graphics chipset/i810 compatible) the knot-2 alternate installer. Worked fine. Then I did dist-upgrade. usplash and a couple of other things got upgraded... now when I boot, it gets to "kernel log", then blanks the screen on X and all consoles, nothing visible anymore. No way to get into any ttys... logging in using sshd still works though. I worked my way through init and found out that this always happens when usplash somehow stops (either when gdm starts, or at S98usplash, or after a few seconds being idle). And it only happened since the upgrade. So I downgraded to 0.4-15 (latest is 0.4-16) and it works again. Whatever has been changed between those versions is not good for certain video cards... on two workstations (both NVidia) I had no problems. If I can help in any way to debug this, please tell me how to.
