Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: firefox

Version: 1.5.dfsg+1.5.0.5-0ubuntu6.06.1
This may affect other versions.

When Firefox has to download a file it cannot display, it gives the user
the option of opening the file in a helper application, or downloading
to disk. The user can select a helper application if desired, and has
the option to tell firefox to always open X type of file in Y helper
application.

If this option is enabled, Firefox cannot handle the helper application being
removed at the later date in a gracefull manner. If filetype X is opened, and
Firefox cannot find helper application Y, then the user is shown the following
message:
--
/tmp/file.example could not be opened, because the associated helper
application does not exist. Change the association in your preferences.
--

However, it is currently impossible for the user to change a set
association in the preferences. The "View & Edit Actions" button in the
download pane of the preferences window appears to be what the user
needs, but it only appears to apply to plugins on the system.

If set helper applications can be edited by the user, this bug reporter
was unable to find it. It doesn't appear to be in the preferences
window, as hinted by the error message. Firefox should not be asking the
user to change a setting which doesn't appear to exist. If the setting
does exist, I feel the help text should be changed to be more helpfull.
Maybe even with a option of changing the helper application there and
then.

** Affects: firefox (Ubuntu)
     Importance: Untriaged
         Status: Unconfirmed

Helper applications cannot be changed, even when asked to do so by Firefox.
