[Bug 55913] Re: Firefox default Homepage should now reffer to 6.06.1

As per mdz, perhaps it is better to leave the material unchanged. I'll
close the bug for now.

In general, there is no need to update documents like this for point
releases. All of the information applies equally to the 6.06.x series.

No
I wonder if this still makes sence.
Since the useres already get used to it! ??

...and given it isn´t a trivial changeat least for dapper.

We should only leave this bug open, if we intend to change anything in
future (read as LTS+1)

No, I don't think so. As a result of the passage of time, and given that
we're not going to be changing the version number in the About Ubuntu
document, and given that updating a package in Dapper is a non-trivial
exercise, I'm tempted to say that we should probably do nothing about
this bug now. Do others have strong views?

[Bug 55913] Re: Firefox default Homepage should now reffer to 6.06.1

2006-08-25 Thread Matthew East
A problem with changing the version number in the documentation - it
can't be done in translations, because the entities we use to substitute
the version number are expanded into the translated xml.

I've started a discussion on the doc list about how to fix this for Edgy
[1], but for now the approach I think we should take to this bug for
Dapper is to leave the documentation with 6.06 LTS as the version number
(as mdz said above, this is still valid), and remove the version number
on the Firefox home page.

Chime in if you disagree.

It should perform that substitution during the build process. Someone from
the development team should be able to provide a simple recipe for this and
for automatically substituting it into the firefox HTML.

It's fine with me whether you update the version number on the Firefox home
page or just remove it.

For Edgy, we should definitely substitute the version number automatically
in both places.

That's what lsb_release does.

About Ubuntu and the other documents are docbook xml and take their
version numbers from one file: /usr/share/ubuntu-docs/libs/global.ent

The firefox homepage is written directly in HTML so we don't have a
simple way to do the same.

I don't know a way to make these depend on lsb_release, but maybe we can
do it for Edgy. I'm not minded to change something like that for Dapper.

An other thought maybe for edgy

Why not have a systemwide variable for this purpose like the same way we
define the LANG variable?

Maybe:
$ echo $DISTRIBUTION
Ubuntu
$ echo $RELEASE
Dapper
$ echo $RELEASENUMBER
6.06
$ echo $RELEASENUMBERMINOR
.1

One thought though:
If we start scipting the Relese Number in "About Ubuntu" why not do the same
with the FF hp?
...and if you are worried about the Number in there, why not take just the name
"Dapper" from lsb_release.

This way we could have the best of both worlds and it would be
consistent with your first post.

2006-08-13 Thread Matthew East
I can't think of a way that the About Ubuntu document automatically
relies on lsb_release at the moment.

So, the changes I will do, based on what Matt has commented above are:

 * Remove the version number from the firefox homepage and its translations
 * Bump the version number in all of the documentation (including About Ubuntu)
to 6.06.1 LTS

Matt: if I've misunderstood what you'd like done, please let me know.

If the inconsistency with the Firefox default page is an issue, I'd prefer
to remove the version number entirely. It doesn't need to be there, and
it's just one more opportunity for human error when doing releases.

Indeed, it would be best if the "About Ubuntu" document automatically
substituted its version number based on lsb_release, so that we have even
fewer things to change.

[Bug 55913] Re: Firefox default Homepage should now reffer to 6.06.1

2006-08-12 Thread Matthew East
Thanks for this Matt: About Ubuntu and all the other ubuntu-specific
documents all get their version number from the same file, so changing
that will change it all.

The firefox homepage is separate from this scheme, so if you want to
leave that and upload new -docs packages with the change to About
Ubuntu, we can.

But it strikes me that the inconsistency might confuse users a bit. If
it were up to me I'd try and ensure the users see the same version
number. If you have any thoughts on this, just repost. Bear in mind the
firefox homepage change would be a one-line job.

Otherwise, we can proceed and make some -docs packages and change the
version number for the documents, and not the firefox homepage.

[Bug 55913] Re: Firefox default Homepage should now reffer to 6.06.1

2006-08-12 Thread Matt Zimmerman
The support team can't rely on this for anything particularly useful; a
user could upgrade to an equivalent level immediately before the point
release, and have the same packages without the version number changing.

Changing "About Ubuntu" should satisfy their needs by giving them an
easy way to have the user graphically check for a minimum point release
level. I don't see a need to change the firefox home pages. If we do
so, we will need to repeat the exercise for every point release in the
future in order to avoid confusion, and I'd like to minimize the number
of things we need to touch when doing that.

[Bug 55913] Re: Firefox default Homepage should now reffer to 6.06.1

2006-08-12 Thread Matthew East
I'm still not completely satisfied that we can close this bug. Matt, as
Thilo pointed out on the mailing list, on the point release spec it
says:

"The support team would like to have good traceability of the contents
of Dapper at its original release and at each point release.
The support team and curious end users would both like to be able to
identify a point-release system (whether from a fresh install or
upgraded) by means of lsb_release, /etc/issue, etc."

It occurs to me that things like "About Ubuntu" and the firefox homepage
are the two main ways that many users will identify their system when
seeking support.

Matt: the change is not difficult. If you want it done, just confirm the
bug and we'll sort it (and we'll try and do the same before future point
releases). If not, please close the bug :)

I just thought it would be more obviously for users they have everything

2006-08-12 Thread Matt Zimmerman
6.06.1 is a maintenance release of 6.06. It merely incorporates many
post-release updates and doesn't constitute a proper new release. It is
not necessary or appropriate to change the version number in every
context. 6.06 is still correct; systems installed or upgraded with
6.06.1 are simply running 6.06 + updates.

Consider it like a service pack for Windows; it's still correct to say
that you're running XP when you've installed XP and applied SP2.
