[Bug 565202] Re: BUG: soft lockup - CPU#0 stuck for 74s! [ksoftirqd/0:4]

2010-06-21 Thread Mihai Secasiu
I have a similar problem with latest kernel from 10.4 . My problem is more
severe as I can't even boot because of it and it doesn't go away.
a few seconds after the "Starting up" message I get:
BUG: soft lockup - CPU0 stuck for 61s! [events/0:6]
and It goes on like this for minutes till I get bored of waiting :)
I disabled ACPI APIC Support and I also tried with ACPI fully disabled but
still no boot.

I don't have this problem with kenel 2.6.31

2010-06-10 Thread Tony Mugan
Ok, just had a longer lockup in the 2.6.35-rc1 mainline kernel.
I will remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag as requested.

[Bug 565202] Re: BUG: soft lockup - CPU#0 stuck for 74s! [ksoftirqd/0:4]

2010-06-10 Thread Tony Mugan
Have just confirmed with mainline kernel (http://kernel.ubuntu.com
/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v2.6.34-lucid/) that the lockups will still happen
if APIC support is enabled in BIOS.

Just had a short lockup (5 secs) on the new 2.6.35-rc1 which only
interrupted mouse and but not music that was playing at the time. (have
not had audio playing before during a lockup so this may be common)

http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v2.6.35-rc1-lucid/

I'll continue with this newer kernel until a longer lockup is
demonstrated.

[Bug 565202] Re: BUG: soft lockup - CPU#0 stuck for 74s! [ksoftirqd/0:4]

2010-06-09 Thread Jeremy Foshee
Hi Tony,

This bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it
recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? Can you try with the
latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are available from
http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ .

If it remains an issue, could you run the following command from a Terminal
(Applications->Accessories->Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach
updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p linux 565202

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be
great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue.
Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the
upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be
done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the
bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text.
Please let us know your results.

Thanks in advance.

[This is an automated message. Apologies if it has reached you
inappropriately; please just reply to this message indicating so.]

[Bug 565202] Re: BUG: soft lockup - CPU#0 stuck for 74s! [ksoftirqd/0:4]

2010-05-09 Thread Tony Mugan
The actual settings required in BIOS (M2v-MX Motherboard BIOS v1005
09/14/07) are as follows to avoid CPU soft lockups...

Under the "Power" menu

ACPI 2.0 Support [YES]
ACPI APIC Support [Disabled]

And the lockups go away :)

Have just confirmed with latest available mainline kernel
(http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v2.6.34-rc6-lucid/) that
the lockups will still happen if APIC support is enabled in BIOS

t...@orac:~$ uname -r
2.6.34-020634rc6-generic

[Bug 565202] Re: BUG: soft lockup - CPU#0 stuck for 74s! [ksoftirqd/0:4]

2010-04-26 Thread Tony Mugan
I tried the ubuntu-packaged mainline kernels and found the same issue
with soft lockups.

Current Kernel : Linux orac 2.6.34-020634rc5-generic #020634rc5 SMP Tue
Apr 20 09:07:31 UTC 2010 x86_64 GNU/Linux

I then tried altering some BIOS settings and disabled ACPI and APIC.

I have not had an lockups since. Since the lockups were so regular, I
am sure this was the issue.

For the record, here is the link to the kernel bug I raised
