I found my problem.  Apparently, I stuck
SDL_AUDIODRIVER=pulse

in my environment sometime when I was floundering with a different audio 
problem.  I took that out of my environment, and I'm all good now.

I have tested for this bug in lucid and, although I see the crossed out
speaker in the game selection menu, I don't get any error in the console
and the sound in the games works fine. Here is my console output:

Particularly, this can be an error regarding the timidity package not
being installed or correctly configured. Could you add the output of the
"apt-cache showpkg timidity" command?
