[Bug 566744] Re: java internal lucida bold variants and external ttf-dejavu faces badly rasterized in KGS cgoban3 client

2010-07-27 Thread Matthias Klose
Make sure that you have ttf-dejavu-extra installed.

If this doesn't help

 - $ ls -d /usr/share/doc/ttf-*
 - remove one of these other font packages, recheck after
removing a font package, until only the ttf-dejavu packages
   are installed.
- if you find the font package which doesn't show the bad font,
reinstall it, and make sure that you see the bad font again.

[Bug 566744] Re: java internal lucida bold variants and external ttf-dejavu faces badly rasterized in KGS cgoban3 client

2010-05-13 Thread ziggystar
Can someone make this clear?
Can this problem be fixed by removing a font package from the installation?

I've removed ttf-dejavu and restarted CGoban3, but the fonts looked
still bad.

[Bug 566744] Re: java internal lucida bold variants and external ttf-dejavu faces badly rasterized in KGS cgoban3 client

2010-05-10 Thread Ingrid
Something like this problem affects me too, but I'm not sure what causes
it.

The version of java I'm using is openjdk-6-jre, on a clean installation
of Ubuntu 10.04. (The problem did not occur with 8.04 or 9.04.) I
haven't installed any fonts.

The font looks like it is too big for the space available to it (e.g.,
descenders from 'g's are chopped off and one column of text runs into
the next).

[Bug 566744] Re: java internal lucida bold variants and external ttf-dejavu faces badly rasterized in KGS cgoban3 client

2010-05-10 Thread Ingrid
On further examination, it looks like my problem does occur on other
Ubuntu distributions.

Given that it is not tied to any specific distribution or version of
java, my problem is possibly due to CGoban3 itself. Perhaps it is
deciding to pack as many lines in as possible, and not properly
estimating the width of columns that have 'Robot' in the player name.

Apologies if this isn't relevant to the original bug.

- - look at ugly bold fonts game offerings are displayed in
+ - look at ugly (too high, ragged) bold fonts game offerings are displayed in
(some internal bold lucida)
+ - look at e.g. overlapping letter 'g' in nicks displayed in nicklist (some
dejavu variant)

  - orderly shaped fonts were displayed with karmic's sun-java6
  - the bad fonts can be seen in openjdk-jre (karmic or lucid) too
