[Bug 568711] Re: Resume from suspend does not work

2011-11-26 Thread papukaija
Please be sure to confirm this issue exists with the latest development release
of Ubuntu. ISO CD images are available from
http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily/current/ . If the issue remains, run the
following command from a Terminal (Applications-Accessories-Terminal) it will
automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect 568711

Also, please be sure to take a look at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingKernelSuspendHibernateResume . If you can
provide any additional information outlined there it would be much appreciated.

Additionally, if you could try to reproduce this with the upstream mainline
kernel that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to
examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds .
Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the
'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow
pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and
deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Thanks in advance.

[Bug 568711] Re: Resume from suspend does not work

2011-11-26 Thread Blaster
@papukaija

I've been reporting this bug and a lot of similar bugs) since 8.10 for
various notebooks, laptops and netbooks. The list of affected systems
I've reported is probably too long to mention.

I can confirm that they all work now.

What fixed it for me (and all my friends and colleagues) was definitely
Kernel 3.0.0.

I'm sorry that I didn't report back since the 11.10 release. Thanks for
the heads up.

[Bug 568711] Re: Resume from suspend does not work

2011-11-22 Thread Bib
Same here. No SD card related, I have not. Fujitsu Siemens Amilo M 7405.
I did fresh default installs on a spare 20GB drive 100% allocated to the
install to find when this happend:
The problem went from Karmic (Jaunty resumed 100% OK) and is still here in
Oneiric (3.0.0-12 and -13 and 3.2rc2).
Then I added to the 100% Oneiric drive (sda1 19GB sda5 swap 1007MB) a new
side/side Jaunty install from LiveCD (I used the 2nd partitionning option,
doing about half/half the hdd for each release) which led the drive sda1Oneiric
~9GB ext4 sda5OneiricSwap all in the end of the disk, and between them I now
have sda6Jaunty~8GB ext3 and sda7JauntySwap ~400MB, plus some unallocated MB
between the 2 swaps. At this time, GRUB legacy becomes the bootloader,
replacing the GRUB2 from Oneiric.
Boot in Jounty+suspend-resume OK (6 quirks found in pm-suspend.log)
Boot in Oneiric (3 different kernels)+suspend-resume OK
Reinstall GRUB2 from Oneiric to sda1,
Boot in Oneiric+suspend-resume KO
Boot in Jaunty+suspend-resume KO
Reinstall GRUB1 from Jaunty to sda1
Boot in Jaunty+suspend-resume OK
Boot in Oneiric+suspend-resume OK

[Bug 568711] Re: Resume from suspend does not work

2011-06-13 Thread Axel Gerber
Dear all,

I am using a Samsung N150 as well but with Gentoo. The last couple of
days I read a lot since I have the same resume problem. I checked here
and there and for me finally found a solution which repeatedly worked
and sounded reasonable for me: Too me it looks like it is the intel
CPU-Idle driver which is responsible. Therefore two solutions:

1) those compiling their own kernel:
UNSELECT the Cpudile Driver for Intel Processors in Power management and ACPI
options in the kernel configuration.

or

2)
Add intel_idle.max_cstate=0 to your kernel parameters (please don't ask me
how to do this with ubuntu)

I hope this time I could contribute something to the linux community as
I cannot really develop and usually only enjoy solutions...

Cheers
 Axel

[Bug 568711] Re: Resume from suspend does not work

2011-06-13 Thread Maarten
I experienced the does not resume after suspend problems with ubuntu 10.4.2 LTS
on a lenovo thinkpad L420. I searched a lot and tried many things. The thing
that seems to remove all problems for me is changing the quirks input in
pm-suspend. I read the man page of pm-suspend, which was very helpful. Then I
tried pm-suspend in the terminal with various quirk combination that seemed
reasonable to me. I have a successful resume with:
pm-suspend --quirk-dpms-on --quirk-radeon-off --quirk-s3-bios --quirk-s3-mode

To get this working for the system I commented out all other quirks that are
listed in
/usr/lib/hal/scripts/linux/hal-system-power-suspend-linux

Hope this helps anybody
Regards,
Maarten

I also have this on a second tier laptop. And it only started about 2
weeks ago. If I go to systempreferencespoweron AC power and
switch from suspend when lid closedtohibernate and then back again,
make as default, it works sometimes. But otherwise, this is really
disappointing. Power modes has always been a problem with Ubuntu. It WAS
fixed in 10.04, not some upgrade broke it.

[Bug 568711] Re: Resume from suspend does not work

2010-10-24 Thread Martin B.
I have been suffering from this bug for quite a while but I was able to solve
it twice. My setup: Dell 1555, Radeon HD4500, Ubuntu 10.4 64-bit.
What I had to do in short was: Not to use the fglrx driver that the Ubuntu
Hardware Driver addlication offered but to completely uninstall the existing
fglrx driver and install the latest driver from the AMD/ATI site.

I performed these steps when running the system in recovery mode, but
that might not even be necessary (but doesn't hurt either).

Uninstall fglrx:
sudo apt-get purge fglrx fglrx-modaliases fglrx-amdcccle
sudo rm -r /etc/ati /etc/X11/xorg.conf
(from here:
http://wiki.ubuntuusers.de/Grafikkarten/ATI/fglrx/Manuelle_Treiberinstallation?redirect=no)

Download driver from here:
http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/linux/Pages/radeon_linux.aspx

Run driver installer:
sudo sh ./ati-driver-installer-10-10-x86.x86_64.run # (in my case)

Initialize driver configuration:
sudo aticonfig --initial

Reboot...

Not sure wether my situation was *really* related to this bug, but the
symptoms were identical.

[Bug 568711] Re: Resume from suspend does not work

2010-10-14 Thread pmos69
Problem is solved for me also in 10.10.
No problems resuming from suspend.

** Description changed:

+ (*** UPDATE: Problem solved for me in 10.10 ***)
+
  Description: Ubuntu lucid (development branch)
  Release: 10.04

  - Hibernate and resume from hibernate work as expected.
  - Suspend works as expected.
  - Resume from suspend gives me a black screen and nothing else.
  - System seems operational except for display. (there's cpu and disk activity)
  - screen backlight comes on.
  - ctrl-alt-f* / alt-f7 does nothing.
  - caps-lock indicator light does not react to key presses

sudo sh -c sync; echo 1 /sys/power/pm_trace; pm-suspend gives me:
     [0.520085] hash matches
/build/buildd/linux-2.6.32/drivers/base/power/main.c:433
  in dmesg.

  - Reproducible every time
  - happens both from closing the lid and from command line
  - No kernel panic/flashing caps-lock

  - Using nvidia-current (195.36.15-0ubuntu2)

  - when changing to ctrl-alt-f1 before suspend and doing: pm-suspend:
    - resume does not work also.
    - screen backlight comes on.
    - ctrl-alt-f* / alt-f7 does nothing.
    - (blind) typing shutdown -h now does orderly shutdown

  - when changing to ctrl-alt-f1 before suspend and doing: killall gdm-binary;
pm-suspend:
    - resume does not work also
    - screen backlight does not come on
    - ctrl-alt-f* / alt-f7 does nothing.
    - (blind) typing shutdown -h now does orderly shutdown

[Bug 568711] Re: Resume from suspend does not work

2010-09-28 Thread Michael Aeschbach
Check my comment #97 as well as it's link, too. My experiences with
resume from suspend with Slackware were very weird. What I can say about
my system is that the resume process did not start at all when I
experienced the black screen syndrom. Pm-suspend logs for successful
and failed attempts are posted on LinuxQuestions.org (cf. #97).
Furthermore: I did disable gnome-screensaver since I had problems with
it when I resumed from hibernate. Another thing, since Ubuntu is Debian-
based: suspend/resumed always worked well for me with Debian 5 (Lenny)
but never with testing (Squeeze). Perhaps somebody could verify this on
his system. If somebody would like me to send the full specs of my
system (lspci), please let me know. Sorry that I'm not yet willing to
install Ubuntu again; Fedora runs just to well and now even suspend to
RAM works again. And last but not least: this behavior is not Ubuntu-
specific. It affects every distro, I believe, since I saw it on Debian
and its derivates (Debian, Ubuntu, LinuxMint, PeppermintOS) as well as
on Slackware, SuSE, Fedora and a bit different on ArchLinux (there it
was a problem with KMS and could at that time be solved by disabling KMS
with kernel bootparameter modeset=0, which is, I think, not possible
anymore, if you want to run the X window system).

What would it take for this bug to be fixed ? My normal work-routine is
severely affected because of this.

I am willing to commit to a 20$ Amazon gift card for a fix (10.04 or

As I wrote earlier (#96), I experienced the same problem with Ubuntu

Same problem here: MSI GX700 (T7500 / Intel 965PM / Realtek RTL8111 /
nVidia GF8600M)

Suspend was working when I was using Ubuntu 8.10. After a fresh install,
single-boot, of Lucid with all updates, I can't resume from suspend
anymore. Screen remains black, hard disk and fans spin, SSH does not
work, and I have to shut it down using the power button. After
rebooting, the network is deactivated.

I can also see some ext3_orphan_cleanup messages in dmesg (I'm using
only ext3 partitions), but nothing more (I guess).

[Bug 568711] Re: Resume from suspend does not work

2010-09-12 Thread Michael Aeschbach
It took such a long time until resume from suspend worked for me again. As I
wrote earlier, s2ram worked on Debian Lenny but not in Testing (and all it's
derivates: Ubuntu 10.04, Mint, Peppermint) and not in all other recent Linux
distros (like Slackware 13.1).
Some days ago, I tried kernel bootparameter acpi_sleep=s3_bios (I do not know
if I did never tried this up now) and now suspend to ram (and resume) works
again on my Lenovo S10 (Intel graphics)! I'm sorry to say that I'm running
Fedora 13 now (with kernel 2.6.34.6-54.fc13.i686). Perhaps somebody else could
check this on Ubuntu 10.04.

[Bug 568711] Re: Resume from suspend does not work

2010-09-12 Thread Michael Aeschbach
Perhaps somebody might be interrested in my experiences with Slackware
(http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/linux-hardware-18/how-does-
hibernate-affect-my-suspend-resume-820417/). What seems important to me
is that the pm-suspend.log, if resuming fails, shows clearly that the
resuming process did not even start. Check the thread to see logs from a
success as well as from a failure, since resuming worked sometimes after
I did a hibernate before a suspend.

2010-09-12 Thread Blaster
This bug is currently the most important flaw in Ubuntu. Problem is,
that this directly affects the prime target market for Ubuntu: small
netbooks, older laptops and everything where power management is
crucial.

It took some time to get this bug marked as confirmed Marking it as
medium importance is a really bad joke.

However, I'm pretty glad to see that Unassigned is still on the job.
As far as I understand he's a pretty solid fellow.

This is clearly a SERIOUS problem, given number of people affected and

[Bug 568711] Re: Resume from suspend does not work

2010-08-19 Thread Dan Becker
I have tried changing every setting that I could find with no luck. Averatec
2150 (MSI motherboard) ati m200 radeon. Not sure that this is just a ubuntu
issues as I have tried other deb based live cd's. From searching the boards
KDE suffered from the same issue but a work around (modeset=0) worked for that.
So could it be a kernel issue? This issue shows up on old and new hardware
and numerous chipsets. Supported ATI chips have been helped by 10.5 drivers.
Thinkpads that have acpitools can sometimes get it to suspend.
I have been able to get hibernate to work, but it is just as quick to cold
boot. I have written ATI as I suspect that some of this issued might be
related to lack of support for older chipsets and closed drivers related to ATI.

I am writing this from win7 as I have been forced for the first time
since 2002 to run win as a primary OS.

[Bug 568711] Re: Resume from suspend does not work

2010-07-30 Thread Cory Hall
Just thought I would Chime in and add myself to the list of people
affected by this bug. Running a Dell Latitude D600 - clean install of
Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx. The machine hibernates correctly and suspends
but will not wake up from suspending it. Very annoying. I'm not really
knowledgeable enough to hack through this problem, hopefully someone
will come up with a fix soon.

[Bug 568711] Re: Resume from suspend does not work

2010-07-22 Thread Blaster
The bug also affects Samsung N150 netbooks. Screen will sometimes wake
though, but WiFi and LAN won't.

Why is Importance of this bug only marked as medium? I'm willing to
bet that 90% of all Ubuntu installations are on laptops or netbooks and
that at 50% are affected by this. So far I've only seen old IBM
Thinkpads perfectly wake from suspend and hibernate.

The current 68 people affected by this bug represents maybe 68,000
people not being smart enough to report bugs. Well, probably more.

This bug should be marked as Critical, since it affects a huge portion
of the target marked for Ubuntu. Power management is crucial for
portable units.

Please raise severity to Critical.

2010-06-13 Thread ledlincoln
I can add my Dell Latitude D600 to the list. It appears to suspend
correctly, but when I open the lid, I hear the hard drive spin up, but
no further activity. Hard power down is necessary. When I power back
up, networking, both wired and wireless, is disabled. I think it's not
just a video issue.

No ext3 partitions or SD cards.

Suspend/Resume does definitely not work here after update according to

my 2.6.34-rc7 testing kernel. That's a very unnerving issue.

Unfortunately the problem is not solved for me...
I updated as well and i see a different output on the screen when failed to
resume from suspend but no errors except for init: ureadahead-other main

It maybe works if downgraded to 2.6.32-22 but this won't serve my turn because
i need some functionalities of the 2.6.34 kernel.

Can anyone confirm that the Xorg process consumes 100% CPU after resume?
I see this happening consistently.

After resume (screen remains black) I logged in via SSH:

$ kill 2201
# this had no effect what-so-ever (still running at 100% CPU)

$ kill -9 2201
# after a few seconds, the gdm login-screen is visible, and I can login
normally.

/var/log/Xorg.0.log contains no strange messages:
...

For me I made it worked.
I did as per this guy said in the post
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=9362429#post9362429

What i Did was, enabled extra option in the visual effects from change
desktop background.
then opened update-manager and checked for any updates. Then installed whatever
came in that list.
Then reverted back from extra to normal, as i never liked these graphics things.

I tried suspend/resume and guess what?, it worked.
I havent tried the hibernate options as i deleted my swap partition. :)

I have been using kernel 2.6.34 http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-

I think there are multiple issues causing freezing, but the later
kernels certainly resolve the issue affecting these Dell Inspiron 1501

[Bug 568711] Re: resume from suspend does not work

2010-05-25 Thread Juerg Wullschleger
to clarify, as for JD Rogers (#54) my system works fine with kernel
2.6.31-21. the problems only occur with kernel 2.6.32-21 and younger.

[Bug 568711] Re: resume from suspend does not work

2010-05-24 Thread Martin Melidonie
It has something to do with udev and the kernel i guess. I keep getting the
same errors in my daemon.log regarding my usb-printer and a specific udev rule
called 85-brltty.rules, when suspending while sd-card is still mounted...
May 16 23:30:34 thinkpad udevd[14092]: SYSFS{}= will be removed in a future
udev version, please use ATTR{}= to match the event device, or ATTRS{}= to
match a parent device, in /lib/udev/rules.d/85-brltty.rules:8
May 16 23:30:34 thinkpad udevd[14092]: SYSFS{}= will be removed in a future
udev version, please use ATTR{}= to match the event device, or ATTRS{}= to
match a parent device, in /etc/udev/rules.d/56-hpmud_support.rules:10
These messages directly appear on screen when suspend failed. It's maybe
possible to solve this in the meanwhile by creating an own udev rule in
/etc/udev/rules.d/. But i am not sure if this won't entirely disable kernel
event processing for these devices...

Addition:
Just tried kernel 2.6.34-rc7...still the same problem.
And i don't know if the above udev message has anything to do with it. I doubt
it since it is a very common message and doesn't say much. Problem is, i don't
get any further error messages. Just these...

[Bug 568711] Re: resume from suspend does not work

2010-05-24 Thread Abraham Smith
Lenovo X61s. Failure to suspend/resume in Ubuntu Netbook (amd64 version) 10.01
when either an SD card or a USB drive is plugged in (whether or not mounted).
Specifically, if X is at the gdm login screen and I run pm-suspend from a
console, it suspends/resumes fine.
If X is logged in an I run pm-susend either from X or from console, suspend
freezes with blinking moon. Alt-SysRq unresponsive.

[Bug 568711] Re: resume from suspend does not work

2010-05-24 Thread Martin Melidonie
@Abraham Smith
Can absolutely confirm this behaviour for amd64 version of Ubuntu 10.04 with
kernel 2.6.34-rc7. Although usb devices (in my case a printer) seem to have no
effect on suspend from what i can tell right now- i didn`t test usb hard-drives
yet.
The filesystem however seems to get not corrupted when suspend failed. Also
after every hard reboot my network-applet showing my wireless-status is
deactivated. I have to manually enable networking again. Don't know how this
relates to the behaviour...
I also get a freeze after running a pm-suspend from gdm login screen with
blinking moon (with sd-card).
Seems to be a kernel bug with some sort of module or module reloading, don't
know how to trace this down...

[Bug 568711] Re: resume from suspend does not work

2010-05-20 Thread Martin Melidonie
Same problem here with suspend and resume on a Lenovo T400 after dist-upgrade
to Ubuntu 10.04. It seems like it works fine ONLY if usb devices are detached
and the sd-card is been removed. Seems like a problem with module reloading at
wakeup...
However i freshly compiled a 2.6.34 kernel today, with the same problem...this
is bugging the hell outta me...;-)
At least 2.6.34 kernel seems to be more energy saving for my laptop then the
2.6.32-generic one. :D

[Bug 568711] Re: resume from suspend does not work

2010-05-20 Thread Stuart
I saw Bugzilla Bug #14543
https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=14543 (and also
https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=16006) which describe an ata
flush bug that has been committed to Ubuntu kernel 2.6.33 and later. The
commit message is http://mirror.celinuxforum.org/gitstat//commit-
detail.php?commit=6013efd8860bf15c1f86f365332642cfe557152f

I have installed Ubuntu mainline 2.6.34 from http://kernel.ubuntu.com
/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v2.6.34-lucid/ following the instructions at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeam/MainlineBuilds. I do not know if this
is a fix - if anyone has a scenario that freezes affected systems, but
should not freeze a correct installation, then I will test it. The
freeze-initiating script on the Bugzilla bug above does not freeze my
affected (kernel 2.6.32) system.

(This now exhibits Launchpad Bug #324894, Corrupted low memory
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/324894 but I do not
know how serious that is)

[Bug 568711] Re: resume from suspend does not work

2010-05-18 Thread JD Rogers
I fail to resume 100% of the time with kernel 2.6.32 with the same
symptoms as post #7.

Also, if a usb mouse is attached, the power never returns to the mouse,
so between no ssh and no usb power, I am pretty sure this is not a video
only issue. I booted a 2.6.31 kernel and suspend resume worked perfectly
(with an n of 1).

2010-05-16 Thread Nick Davies
I have the same problem - or at least I did until I followed #38. I
usually have an sd card mounted so I simply unmounted it, put the laptop
into suspend, resumed with the power button and it came back. That's
the first time it's done for at least two upgrades, so thanks, Juerg.
It maybe helps that we have the same laptop, I also have a Dell XPS
M1330.

Same problem as everyone else.
What I find strange is that suspend/resume appears to work the first time after

blank screen.
Occasionally it also freezes going into suspend.

Got the issues with suspend/hibernate on 2.6.32-22-generic. After I have
read the topic#40 I did try to do suspend/resume without SD-card and it
went successfully both! The SD card is a regular microSD with the
adapter, 2GB FAT drive with whole volume. So, looks like I need a new
sticker remove sd-card before the lid be closed :)

The system is DELL Vostro 1400 with Intel graphics card.

[Bug 568711] Re: resume from suspend does not work

2010-05-14 Thread Stuart
Juerg, I have reverted from grub2 to grub and still have freezes and
failure to resume. It does not make the problem worse, but does not make
it any better.

In combination with fixing various .xsessions-errors (XID collision,
trouble ahead, Nautilus-Share-Message: Called net usershare info
and dmesg error *ERROR* Forcing to 32M GART size (because of ASIC bug
?)) I can usually run for a full day without a freeze, but a second day
after resume usually freezes.

HARDWARE of affected users seems to include AMD and Intel processors,
NVidia and ATI graphics, as well as varied wireless. Is there anything
in common?
