[Bug 573101] Re: No video signal after Log out in gnome when multiple users
Why is this bug marked as a duplicate of #546578, when this bug is an NVIDIA problem, while the other one is not? I'm removing the duplicate marking. ** This bug is no longer a duplicate of bug 546578 black screen after a few user switches -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/573101 Title: No video signal after Log out in gnome when multiple users -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 573101] Re: No video signal after Log out in gnome when multiple users
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 546578 *** https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/546578 David, I have to disagree with re-entangling two bugs, which seem to be copycats (i.e. displaying similar behaviour). The blackscreen bug #546578 (duplicates #529882, #555298, #555870, #557779, #570687) appears after a few user switches, which can happen with only ONE user on the system. For some people the resolution has been to apply xgamma… The bug has now been related to a fade-out problem in the gnome-screensaver. The blackscreen bug #573101 (duplicates #560911, #561538, #573101, #574909, #577219, #578979, #585685) appears only with MULTIPLE users on the system. The blackscreen appears after one user logs out, even from a failsafe xterm session. So a change to gnome-screenssaver CANNOT be a workaround for bug #573101 (the failsafe session does not run gnome- screensaver) and is therefore not a duplicate of bug #54678. This bug is related to the NVidia driver, which stops the active TTY from displaying the GDM – LoginWindow session (I have confirmed this with SSH). The x-update solution by Connie is the definite resolution for this bug. I would suggest to differentiate between bug #54678 and bug #573101 by marking them as copycats (not an official launchpad option though, but references can be placed in the bug descriptions). Please confine yourself of the difference by reading the bug reports and if so change the duplicates as suggested above (I will not take the liberty myself at this point). [Bug 573101] Re: No video signal after Log out in gnome when multiple users
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 546578 *** https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/546578 It seems patching with xgamma and gnome-screensaver is indeed a workaround for a problem in the ATI driver. This is what I conclude after reading more bug reports. I cannot be sure as I do not experience this bug #546578. I do know from experience that it is not a workaround for the NVIDIA driver bug #573101, which appears after user logout with multiple users on the system (as described above). -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/573101 Title: No video signal after Log out in gnome when multiple users -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Login to user B (Xterm or Gnome session), ensure all is working properly and logout from user B. - screen goes black - keyboard no longer works - mouse no longer works - remote SSH shows GDM does not start GDM - LoginWindow session on the active TTY, as it normally does after logging out with only one user on the system. TTY does not respond to - input, system hangs. + input. Patch: - Install latest NVidia graphics drivers. + Install latest NVidia graphics drivers. Hello! I have installed Ubuntu 10.04 LTS Desktop (lucid) from scratch. Then I've made 2 users. Then I login as one user and switch to the second user using gnome menu (not gdm). (New feature in lucid). When I do Log Out from the second user - video signal disappears and I'm not able to use neither X nor tty to do something with the system. I have Nvidia driver (version 173.14.22) turned on. When I turn it off and do the steps described above - video signal remains, but when I return to the screen of the first user - the brightness of the screen goes very low. (Fade bug in Gnome?) And sometimes I even get black screen with lonely mouse. (The screen is not unfaded). Maybe there are two different bugs? With nvidia driver (when screen is reset). And with gnome unfading when unlocking the screen. [Bug 573101] Re: No video signal after Log out in gnome when multiple users
Sorry for the many updates. I have read a few bug reports, initially thinking my problem had to do with the gnome-screensaver. Now I can confirm I had the same problem with my NVidia driver. I have an NVidia Geforce4 MX 4000 graphics card and the 96.43.17 NVidia driver installed, which came with Ubuntu 10.04 (2.6.32-26-generic kernel). I manually updated to the 96.43.19 driver and the problem is gone. I made some changes so that other people can distinguish the NVidia driver bug and gnome-screensaver bug more easily. [Bug 573101] Re: No video signal after Log out in gnome when multiple users
I'm running Ubuntu 10.4 (Lucid) and I had this problem with getting a black screen when switching users also. Following Igor's advice fixed it for me. The steps I took were: 1. Download the nvidia-96 96.43.18-0ubuntu1 package from http://packages.ubuntu.com/maverick/nvidia-96 2. Install the package with the following command: sudo dpkg -i nvidia-96_96.43.18-0ubuntu1_i386.deb 3. Restart the computer Since then everything works perfectly. [Bug 573101] Re: No video signal after Log out in gnome when multiple users
It seems that this bug is fixed in Maveric, at least for 173 drivers (173.14.27). I tested 173 and user switching works fine now. According to the changelog the fix is also applied to 96. There is no problem with installing 173.14.27 on Lucid: 1. download the packages by hand: http://mirrors.kernel.org/ubuntu/pool/restricted/n/nvidia-graphics-drivers-173/nvidia-173-kernel-source_173.14.27-0ubuntu1_i386.deb http://mirrors.kernel.org/ubuntu/pool/restricted/n/nvidia-graphics-drivers-173/nvidia-173_173.14.27-0ubuntu1_i386.deb http://mirrors.kernel.org/ubuntu/pool/main/n/nvidia-graphics-drivers-173/nvidia-173-modaliases_173.14.27-0ubuntu1_i386.deb to /tmp 2. cd /tmp 3. dpkg -i nvidia*deb and voila. I think that it should be backported to lucid ASAP. -- No video signal after Log out in gnome when multiple users https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/573101 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 573101] Re: No video signal after Log out in gnome when multiple users
@Igor Wojnicki I got 195 when I switched the driver from 173 to 'latest version' in the hardware driver dialogue, (under the Administration menu) doing that, downloaded and installed the driver itself, you then press Activate, then restart your computer. You can then check the version by opening the terminal and typing 'nvidia-settings'. I does not appear as 195 in the drivers dialogue, it just shows as 'latest version' (why they couldn't add the version number here is beyond me). There is no need to look into the ubuntu repos, I can only assume its downloaded from a Nvidia repo, not Ubuntu's? (I'm only guessing here, as like you say, its not in the Ubuntu ones). Hope this helps. Re: [Bug 573101] Re: No video signal after Log out in gnome when multiple users
@Leona It's wierd, I've got two entries in Hardware Drivers: NVIDIA (173) [recommended, and NVIDIA(96). And that's it - no more entries. I solved this on my machine by, Go to the System menu, then Administration and Hardware Drivers Select the latest version (recommended) nvidia driver. (bottom option) Let it download, select apply and restart. This should install a later version eg 195, which seems to resolve the problem. Hope this helps.
