Update 2010-05-02:  An active LVM partition on the same disk will also cause 
the problem.
See either the May 2 news item, or the following bug report for a list of 
suggested patches to apply to parted-2.2 to avoid this problem: Bug 608712 - 
GParted fails to edit/delete partitions if active LVM on same disk device.
These suggested patches have been applied to GParted Live 0.5.2-9 which is 
available in the GParted Live Stable folder.
