When I press the power button to come back from the hibernation, the login splash screen comes up instead of the anticipated "Locked splash screen". When I log in as the same user as I had when I hibernated, it's a fresh desktop. As well, I noticed that NetworkManager Applet GUI icon in the top left notes it is disabled and I did not disable this before I hibernated.
