[Bug 580206] Re: gnome-help crashed (segmentation fault) while printing
Ok. I installed Maverick, and now the situation has became even worst. Help program crashes during its startup. The main windows tries to open, but after a while it crashes (without displaying nothing). My previous complaint was about the procedure https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures which its almost tricky for a normal user. I mean: I spent a lot of time trying to get a good bug report. However it was not possible (see comments above #11, #12 and #13. Now I upgraded to Maverick. I followed again the procedure at wiki pages. The command "bash list-symbols-packages-v2.sh -p $(pidof -s yelp)" is not usable: yelp never runs: it crashes always at startup. See attached file yelp-logmessages.txt for the messages issued by yelp to command line. Therefore I tried "list-dbgsym-packages-v2.sh /usr/bin/yelp". It doesn't work. Its output was unuseful (see attached file "list-dbgsym- packages-v2.sh-output.txt" So far I was not sure to have all the tools "ok" for the debugging. However I tried to go on with wiki instructions. Obviously I was not able to "attach" a gdb session to the running yelp program, because the yelp program never runs: it crashes in a while. Therefore I tried to run yelp from "inside" gdb, even if this approach is not described into the wiki pages (and please, remember English is not my language). Incredible to say, yelp doesn't crashes if run inside gdb. It works, until I try to print. When I try to print, it crashes. Please, now see attached file yelp-gdb-log.txt where You see again the crash info. Many thanks so far. (Please, consider that I'm now "tracking" some bugs I crashed on my computer. I subscribed launchpad for this purpose. This bug seems that it is not seen but anybody else, isn't it?) Ciao ... happy new year ... [Bug 580206] Re: gnome-help crashed (segmentation fault) while printing
Cesare Mastroianni, thank you for working on this bug and making Ubuntu better. In order to test this issue in Maverick, one may do so via a Live CD environment -> http://releases.ubuntu.com/10.10/ and/or in a VirtualBox VM environment ( apt-get install virtualbox-ose or http://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Linux_Downloads ). In the future, please follow the debugging procedures found at: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures Once Maverick has been tested this bug's Status should be marked New. While your complaint about this bug's management is duly noted, the logic you can't test Maverick because you did not install it does not hold water here. ;) ** Changed in: yelp (Ubuntu) Status: Expired => Incomplete -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/580206 Title: gnome-help crashed (segmentation fault) while printing -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 580206] Re: gnome-help crashed (segmentation fault) while printing
Sorry to bother You with further comments. Let me complain about this bug management method. I notified You a REAL bug. I spent many time (hours) to investigate the problem according to the instruction You wrote me. I discovered that the crash vanished when running the application "from inside" valgrind. I reported the data output from gdb and valgrind. I'm not expert: I'm not able to decrypt these info. Last You invited me to try with Maverick. But I CANNOT try with Maverick, since I never installed it. Then the bug expired. Ok, but the bug is still here. There is no way to print the manpages, because the help program crashes when try to print. Merry Christmas. Sorry to bother You again ... Even if the execution of gnome-help inside valgrind doesn't generate any crash, I saw that the log output of valgrind is not "empty". Maybe the new attached TXT file could display some info about the bug. I'm not able to understand, but it seems that valgrind detected some errors and prevented the SIGSEGV to happen. [Bug 580206] Re: gnome-help crashed (segmentation fault) while printing
After a long time and a difficult task (at least for me) I had the dbgsym installed. Then I run valgrind. Please, see comment #7: when I run gnome-help "inside" valgrind the bug disappear, I mean gnome-help won't crash while printing (please, remember that the bug actually was a crash when printing, always for each printing command - I never had a page printed ...). The situation is the same as some days ago: gnome-help alone crashes gnome-help with gdb crashes gnome-help with valgrind doesn't crash - so no bug report with valgrind is generated However, now I generated a new crash report with gdb. No file was generated into /var/crash and therefore I'm not able to follow Your instructions this way. I'm attaching the new logfile from GDB which seems to be full of debugging symbols. Is this enough or should I do something more? Thanks so far. [Bug 580206] Re: gnome-help crashed (segmentation fault) while printing
Thanks. I have a problem. I run "./list-dbgsym-packages.sh -p `pidof gnome-help` -a -t" and I received a long list of dbgsym packages. I passed that list to "sudo apt-get install" and I received back an error issue. I translate it from Italian to English (I hope to be able to): "Some packages cannot be installed. ... The following packages have dependencies that cannot be satisfied: libgtk2.0-0-dbgsym: depends: libgtk2.0-0 (= 2.20.1-0ubuntu1) but 2.20.1-0ubuntu1renbag2 is being to be installed". Unfortunately, I cannot find any info about package "2.20.1-0ubuntu1renbag2". --- Then I tried "./list-dbgsym-packages.sh -p `pidof gnome-help` -t" and I received another short list of 9 dbgsym packages. I passed the list to "sudo apt-get install" and I received back the SAME error for the same missing package. --- It seems that it is not so easy (for me at least, not a computer expert I mean) to debug this problem. Where am I wrong? Is there any problem about my "/etc/apt/sources.list" configuration? Please, help me ... thanks in advance. We need a valgrind log with the yelp, libgtk2 and libglib2 dbgsym packages installed, the one you submitted is missing a lot of symbols. we prefer reports submitted with apport, so please do it that way next time, to know how to do it, follow the instructions i've previously said to You. [Bug 580206] Re: gnome-help crashed (segmentation fault) while printing
Thanks again for Your help. I should say that the crash bug of Yelp happens here daily, and that this SW is not usable for printing. Today I collected another crash for You to help in debugging. Valgrin is not able to catch the problem (see my comment #7), but GDB is able. So, please, see the attached GDB session output. Any help will be appreciated. [Bug 580206] Re: gnome-help crashed (segmentation fault) while printing
Hi there. I try to use valgrind. I then run gnome-help from "inside" valgrind. I repeated EXACTLY the same steps-actions that usually generate the crash. No crash happened. See attached file gnome-help-NOT-crash.txt Then I ran gnome-help alone, without valgrind. I repeated EXACTLY the same steps-actions that usually generate the crash. I mean, I peform EXACTLY the same steps-actions as before (with valgrind) and now I get the crash. See attached files gnome-help-crash-a.txt and gnome-help- crash-b.txt. VERY IMPORTANT: when running from inside valgrdin, the printing procedure displayed the printer (HW) interface, then a pop-up window came claiming that the requested page to be printed was not "available" ... I cannot imagine what this means. When running alone without valgrind, the printing procedure crashed BEFORE the printer (HW) interface comes up, and no pop-up window came out. It seems that valgrind some how "bounded" the gnome-help behaviour so that gnome-help succeded in managing a "printing page fault", while without valgrind gnome-help is not able to manage it. Sorry for my bad english ... furthermore I'm not an expert ... Any hint will be appreciated. [Bug 580206] Re: gnome-help crashed (segmentation fault) while printing
Many thanks. See here new info and comments. 1) The problem reported yesterday happened onto a i386 computer. Today I found again the same crash problem onto a AMD Sempron machine, running the same up-to-date Lucid system. 2) No crash file was generated, nor running gnome-help inside GDB, nor running it alone. I looked for "crash" file everywhere in the filesystem using the "find" command line utility. 3) I run gnome-help from a terminal, and I captured the output: see the attached TXT file. I'm not able to decrypt its meaning, but it seems to be a real BUG. Many thanks again. I hope that these info could help You to fix the problem. Ciao from Italy. [Bug 580206] Re: gnome-help crashed (segmentation fault) while printing
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. However, your crash report is either missing or challenging to deal with as a ".crash" file. Please follow these instructions to have apport report a new bug about your crash that can be dealt with by the automatic retracer. If you are running the Ubuntu Stable Release you might need to enable apport in /etc/default/apport and restart. If you are using Ubuntu with the Gnome desktop environment - launch nautilus and navigate to your /var/crash directory and double click on the crash report you wish to submit. If you are using Kubuntu or Xubuntu you can file the crash using /usr/share/apport/apport-qt --crash-file=/var/crash/_my_crash_report.crash in a terminal - where _my_crash_report.crash is the crash you would like to report. I'm closing this bug report since the process outlined above will automatically open a new bug report which can then dealt with more efficiently. Thanks in advance for your cooperation and understanding. ** Changed in: yelp (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided => Medium ** Changed in: yelp (Ubuntu) Status: New => Invalid -- gnome-help crashed (segmentation fault) while printing https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/580206 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
