Ok, I figured out how to reproduce this problem. Turn off the power to your computer without (hold down the power button for 4 seconds) shutting it down from the menu. If you do this, the next time you start up Ubuntu you will have the messed up panel icons. How is this bug report incomplete? The only thing that I am missing is the name of the package. Paul, this report status was not set to Invalid, it was set as Incomplete, and it is still incomplete. Please tell us the version of the package you are using (look at Synaptic Package Manager). Ok, after I rebooted another time, the network icon disappeared. I still could connected to my network. In the space where the icon used to be there was a blank space. Clicking on the blank space did nothing. A reboot fixed this issue. Here's something more. When I re-added Workspace Switcher, the Show Desktop applet crashed and a window popped-up asking me if I want to reload it or not. Two other applets crashed, but I can't remember what their names were.
