Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: emacs-snapshot

This is a new install of 10.04 with almost nothing (extra) on it. I
first tried to install the emacs23 but it locked the machine up and
required a power cycle to reboot it. I then tried removing it - which
was difficult, as every time I touched apt-get it wanted to finish the
previous install. Sorry I can't add more detail - it was a couple nights
ago and I moved on via building from source. It took this long to get
email up to interact with the account creation process. -jkc-

I tried a clean install of emacs23 and related packages all at once. Bad idea.
Still cleaning out the debris. Built it from source successfully afterwards.
