Happens on one, but not a 2nd, 64-bit 10.04 machine, and doesn't appear to happen on 10.10 (though it could turn up). Problem occurred after reboot. My system has stopped asking for passwords twice -- the original behavior has returned sometime in the past week or two. Interestingly, the only packages I can see that have had updates in that time period have been: xulrunner firefox_3.6.x firefox_gnome_support firefox_branding there have also been some updates to other packages lately, and I don't know exactly when I applied them, but I suppose it's possible there is some strange interaction among other packages. Not certain the underlying cause of this behavior is gnome-screensaver because I believe this behavior started just a few weeks ago, but the package manager says the last update to this package was released 2010-05-26. I may be wrong but I believe I started seeing this behavior in early July. I'm running Ubuntu Netbook Edition 10.04. Just a quick glance through the packages in my cache shows some libpam updates that came through about that time, so I wonder if it's a pam issue? I can confirm this. When gnome-screensaver is activated by power management I must login twice if the screen is also locked.If the screen is not locked then the display starts up twice. When the screen is locked or the machine is suspended through the main menu (no screensaver) then login is OK.
