Correction to my last comment:

Using the generic printer driver, as described in the thread cited, does
in fact speed up printing.

[Bug 598919] Re: Slow printer processing for HP Laserjet 2100

2010-09-09 Thread Chris Isbell
Same problem on Canon imageRunner 2200 and Canon imageRunner C2250 using
the pxlmono and pxlcolor drivers respectively.

Printing documents that are substantially text is OK. Documents
containing images can be very slow and the printer sometimes outputs
part of the page containing the image and then restarts the whole job
from the beginning.

Changing from pxlmono to lj4dith resolves the performance problem, but
cannot duplex print. The ljet4d driver prints quickly and allows duplex
printing. However, it truncates the end of every line slightly. (For
example, if the last character on a line is an 'n', this looks like an
'r'.)

It therefore appears that the problem is with the pxlmono and pxlcolor
drivers.

Tracing the output to the printer with Wireshark shows that computer
repeatedly sending what appears to be the same output to the printer as
per the following sample:

An eleven-page document with one large image hangs at the page
containing the image. After about thirteen minutes, the printer output
around a third of the page containing the image and the job restarted
from the beginning. As this point I aborted it. The first attempt at
printing had output over 30M bytes of data to the printer up to the
point at which it failed.

The Wireshark trace has been saved, but has not been attached to this
report because of its size (11.2M bytes compressed).

[Bug 598919] Re: Slow printer processing for HP Laserjet 2100

2010-07-01 Thread Till Kamppeter
We need some more information:

Which applications are you using?

Can you attach error_log files of different jobs as described in "CUPS
error_log" on https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingPrintingProblems?

While a job is processing, run the command "top" in a terminal window to
see which processes take how much CPU time and how much memory.
Processes owned by the user "lp" (second column, "USER") are parts of
the printing workflow. For the most CPU/memory-consuming processes run

ps auxwww | grep

Replace "" by the actual process number from the "top"
output, first column ("PID"). The output contains the full command line
of the process. Post this output here.
