My comment above about dvd://idontexist does no longer apply to the hardy version. I have gotten this error message once (and it was a while ago)...I now use Hardy (haven't played any DVDs yet, but if I get any errors, there will be a separate bug report for it). I think this is caused by newer DRM methods like ARccOS. MPlayer is supposed to be able to handle that form of DRM. Totem/edgy displays this error for just about any error in DVD playback, including files that don't exist (play dvd://idontexist) and read errors reported by the DVD drive.
