I haven't investigated this deeply, but here is a more complete description:

If lucid behaves differently, I'll recheck and try to find out why e2fsck.conf 
in the initrd solved the problem for me.

For what it's worth, the script that produces that output is definitely
run after the initramfs has gone away.  The debian-user post linked to
in that thread just seems mistaken to me.
