So "Showing the bar in all directories is a bug we already fixed" from
#4, means it only shows in home directory paths now? I think that is
what I am seeing and is still intrusive and wasteful of screen space.

[Bug 601102] Re: ubuntu one disabled notice in every nautilus window

2010-07-05 Thread Martin Pool
I think suggesting "hey you might like to try Ubuntu One" is quite
helpful, as is pointing out when something might be expected to be
synced but isn't. But the current state is very off-putting, and I think
it will incline users to deinstall ubuntuone-client to get rid of it,
rather than encouraging them to try it.

This banner currently appears on all directories, even those that would
be highly inappropriate or dangerous to sync, such as ~, /home, /, etc.
You probably don't want to accidentally sync dot files or databases or
.bzr directories. There's only one button "enable" so people who don't
deinstall are likely to click that in the hope it will go away and that
may cause trouble.

It might be good if there was a 'close' button as appears in banners
like this in chromium and firefox. If I've decided I really don't want
to sync a particular directory I shouldn't be nagged about it.

On the other hand if I am syncing a particular directory, I think Ubuntu
One should just work without being intrusive. An activity indicator or
per-film emblems would be enough to assure me it's working.

Showing the bar in all directories is a bug we already fixed and which
should be in the next upload this week. About your other points, I think
they are valid, so forwarding this to design for discussion

[Bug 601102] Re: ubuntu one disabled notice in every nautilus window

2010-07-06 Thread duanedesign
Martin,
I was unsure the status of wishlist bugs as far as what the u1 project likes.
Not covered in the u1 bug workflow. I will check with the devs to clarify. I
agree with the points made. The comments of this bug are consistent with
comments I have got from users. I wanted to make sure this got seen by the
proper people, so I went ahead and set the status and importance and assigned
it to one of the u1 teams.
thank you
Duane

Duane, I think ad-hoc volunteer triage is pretty good and something we
ought to encourage. On the other hand marking a potentially serious bug
as wishlist when you're not sure that's what the project would do is
potentially injecting noise.

2010-07-06 Thread duanedesign
I am quite familiar with the U1 bug workflow. In fact not many people
have triaged more U1 bugs then me. I can assure you i am not assigning
status and importance at random. The point i was trying to make was
though I and others i asked about this agreed with the assignment i
gave i will clarify this and update the U1 bug workflow. I assigned the
bug to a U1 team and triaged it so it would get seen by a U1 developer.
Which it did.

respectfully,
duanedesign

[Bug 601102] Re: ubuntu one disabled notice in every nautilus window

2010-07-06 Thread duanedesign
matt,
i noticed something in your syncdaemon settings that might potentially cause
you some issues.

UbuntuOneUserSyncdaemonConfig:
 [bandwidth_throttling]
 read_limit = 2097152
 write_limit = -1
 on = False

The write limit is set to -1. This has been a bug in the past. The setting
might of followed you from Karmic. Please make sure under Ubuntu One
Preferences , 'Devices' Tab, you do not have the write or read limit set to 0.
After that is determined if you run the following command in a Terminal
(applications > accessories > Terminal) the file will be recreated with the
current settings.

rm ~/.config/ubuntuone/syncdaemon.conf

thank you,
duanedesign

Hi Duane,

I'm not familiar with the triage rules in ubuntuoneclient or with your
role in it. I am concerned that if we ship Maverick with this unfixed
it will cause a serious backlash. I don't want this to unnecessarily
become a huge contentious bug.
