I just replicated it with the current ppc/desktop CD, which generates a
proper installer crash (and the same effect: two bootstrap partitions
and it seems that yaboot installation selects the wrong one).

Attaching /var/log/syslog from the live system (after installation),
there was no /var/log/installer syslog in the target system yet.

Do you still have /var/log/installer/syslog from such an installation?
yaboot-installer should change Open Firmware's boot-device to point to
the same bootstrap partition into which it installed yaboot.

This happens also with resizing an existing partition and automatic
partitioning in the free space.
