I just did a recent minimal install on an ibook clamshell and ran into the same problem; you need to manually load the driver. This was a Hardy install. I also have the trouble with the sound. It was nice on 6.06 when it automatically installed which it doesn't do on 6.10. from the bug report: Ok, did some more searching around, and turns out the driver for my soundcard is not loaded by default.
