Installing python-gnome2 on Ubuntu Server 12.04.1 LTS solved the problem for me. However, I don't know why, except that it appeared to pull in a bunch of DBUS interface libraries. None of the workarounds indicated here seem to work. However, installing the package python-gnome2 did work. As a workaround restarting the dbus service works (/etc/init.d/dbus restart).
