[Bug 611780] Re: applications menu doesn't show icons

2011-06-22 Thread Sebastien Bacher
I think it's easier to find a menu if there is an image above it. But
maybe I'm wrong...

Well designers and user testing seems to show it's not that obvious

Is it useful to open a new bug report here to defend this choice?

No, that was discussed when the change happened which is quite old, you
can try to check bugs opened by then

2011-06-21 Thread Fabounet
Considering the number of people who are lost with this lack of icons in the
menus (not to mention that all the other OS have icons in their menus), I
think it can be considered as a bug.
But that's another problem, and does not concern Cairo-Dock ^^
So problem solved for us, since we now activate this option by default.

Sorry, it's just because with the new version of Launchpad, we don't see
easily who receives these messages and this problem is not in gconf or
gnome-session but in gsettings-desktop-schemas.

Now I can understand why icons are now displayed (but it's strange because I
think it's much faster to find an icon than a text :-/ )
But about the menus... I understand why designers are ofter misunderstood. :-)

2011-06-21 Thread Matthieu Baerts
Ok I've forced it by using gtk_image_menu_item_set_always_show_image
(core: rev 787 plug-ins: rev 1995).

But for the menus, simply have a look to these two screenshots of Gedit menus:
menus_have_icons = false (by default) =
http://uppix.net/0/b/4/5546570d9a3bb52e0e97b6e72ebf5.png
menus_have_icons = true =
http://uppix.net/d/8/e/c643da1f28810df1baed9d7fadb01.png

I think it's easier to find a menu if there is an image above it. But maybe I'm
wrong...

Hi,

Using Ubuntu 11.04 (Gnome) and Cairo-Dock 2.3.0 (OpenGL), I have no icon
displayed in the Application Menu despite the applet option being set.

May be this bug shouldn't be closed...

[Bug 611780] Re: applications menu doesn't show icons

2011-06-20 Thread Matthieu Baerts
Some icons on Gnome are not disabled by default but I don't know why.

You can have these icon by modified this gconf key:
 /desktop/gnome/interface/menus_have_icons
You can easily do that with the Help module of Cairo-Dock (right click on the
dock / Cairo-Dock / Help): go to the Problem tab, expand the last question
(about this bug) and click on the button on the right.
 Or open gconf-editor.

If you're using the latest revision from our bzr repository, this gconf
key is enable at startup. But as I said I don't know why Gnome disables
this key by default...

I think that Ubuntu should change the schema of this gconf key to enable
it by default.

I'm using Cairo-dock 2.3.0~2 (latest from stable PPA).

I've missed the gconf key thing the first time... It solved the problem.
Still, I totally agree that this default setting is confusing.
