[Bug 614748] Re: Screen corruption on gdm startup.

2010-08-07 Thread Argyle
Okay, I figured out grub, I think. It looks like it was installing to
the wrong hard-drive. In order to get any grub changes to take effect,
I have to issue: "sudo grub-install /dev/sda" and then also "sudo
update-grub". Additionally, I added "splash quiet" back in and there is
no problem with the display now. Maybe it was just because I was
booting into the wrong kernel version from grub. Problem resolved, I
guess, but it would've been nice not to have had to spend the whole
morning getting this upgrade up and running again. Now on to my other
computer, which no longer responds to keyboard or mouse input after its
upgrade.

If I remove "splash" from the linux line in grub, I don't get the screen
corruption.

This would be a fine solution if I could get it to stick. It seems I
have to do this manually every time I reboot. I've tried removing
"splash" from GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT= in the file /etc/default/grub
and running an update-grub, and I've tried removing it from the
/boot/grub/menu.lst defoption= line (and running an update-grub), but
the offending entry always ends up back in my grub list at bootup.
