Yes, I tried, but it produced a different .pdf. It seemed to be fine, but I couldn't check compat and assumed the USENIX page made sense. Anyway, I'll drop it and use updmap-sys if I encounter any problems. Use pdfinfo to check that all fonts are embedded. But if you have a halfway modern TeX distribution then *all* fonts are automatically embedded in type1 format.
