I have the same problem. See the attached screenshot. There are actually two problems here that could be related. First, the applet does not show an icon. It is still clickable, however, if you can find the applet. Secondly, the files and folders in the list also lack icons. This second problem, however, does not occur is menus_have_icons is enabled. (Enabling buttons_have_icons does not fix the first problem).
