[Bug 628097] Re: Maverick ubiquity windows can not be resized/maximized

2011-03-07 Thread jerrylamos
All my pc's are multi-boot with multiple partitions and a couple have
two hard drives, let alone the USB hard drive. That one has 3 or more
partitions on 3 hard drives which s a real pain with Natty.

Natty's partitioner is like looking through a gun slit and since the
partitions are not shown in numerical order it's very confusing at the
least.

My best bet is to fire up gparted beforehand where I can at least view a
few partitions, one drive at a time, then carefully copy down the
particulars on my intended targetm then very very carefully read the
Natty partitioner to make sure it really matches what Gparted showed.

Now the real killer is my netbook Acer Aspire one. Runs Natty Unity 3D
with all its features and warts just fine. Good quick pc for Natty.

I can't install Natty on the netbook because the partitioner panel has a
big black banner at the top, followed by partitioner info, and then the
crucial selection of which of the three hard drives grub is to be
installed to trailing way down the window. With a 1024x600 all the grub
info falls off the bottom of the partitioner window.

Partitioner window won't scroll.

Partitioner window won't page up.

Absolutely no way to access the button way down at the bottom of the
window to see and accept the grub location.

Had no such problem installing Maverick on the netbook.

Now I had 2 choices - one was to take the USB hard drive over to a
desktop with a 1440x900 screen which was big enough.

My other choice I haven't tried yet is to put an external monitor on the
Aspire.

If Ubiquity will not ever have the ability to scroll or page the window
up and down, then at least get rid of the big black banner using up
several lines, and better yet break the window into a partitioner window
and then follow with another window with the grub info on it.

Now I haven't created a launchpad bug on this yet.

[Bug 628097] Re: Maverick ubiquity windows can not be resized/maximized

2011-03-06 Thread Erick Brunzell
@ jerrylamos,

I subscribed you so you'll hopefully see this. I started a new bug
report - bug 728615 - which I think is more appropriate to this. You'll
notice there I mentioned, the fixed size manual partitioning window
running offscreen (aka: not fitting) with certain small screens. And I
referenced just one example: bug 715401. There are actually many.

[Bug 628097] Re: Maverick ubiquity windows can not be resized/maximized

2011-03-03 Thread Evan Dandrea
This is by design. The installer employs some complex layouts and the
most straightforward and reliable way to accomplish this is to force the
window to a fixed size.

The slideshow should never be cut off. If it is in Natty, please file a
separate bug for that. The advanced partitioner is a bit cramped at the
moment due to a particularly long string for the bootloader options.

[Bug 628097] Re: Maverick ubiquity windows can not be resized/maximized

2011-03-03 Thread Erick Brunzell
Could the bootloader option string be changed so at least 5 or 6 device
designations could appear in the partition preparation section?

Would it perhaps be possible to hide the bootloader options under a
button? Then have that button open a new window like the Advanced button
used to do on the final install page?

I really don't have a great idea here. Could you and Colin Watson
perhaps discuss possibilities regarding this?

Something that's always worrisome about grub installation is the
possibility of people installing it to Windows system partitions.

Perhaps I should start a new bug report specific just to improving that
one installer window?

BTW thank you very much for all the great work so far. IMHO ubiquity is
now looking much better.

[Bug 628097] Re: Maverick ubiquity windows can not be resized/maximized

2011-03-03 Thread Evan Dandrea
Oh, I'm intent on shortening that string down to its previous size. I
think the new text is superfluous. I'll have a look at the UI and see
if we can make any more room for the treeview, possibly by fixing a
longstanding bug in the partition bar that causes it to calculate its
padding incorrectly.

2011-03-02 Thread Erick Brunzell
I know this is only wishlisted at my request but it is now difficult
to adequately see the existing partition arrangement when using the
manual install option. I created a comparison between Lucid's manual
option and Natty/Mavericks so you can see what I'm talking about.

2010-12-02 Thread Erick Brunzell
Just testing the Natty pre-Alpha1 i386 Live CD and thought it worth
mentioning that particularly the manual partitioning window would be
much easier to use if it were possible to maximize or resize it.

Really more of a wish list item so apologies in advance.

[Bug 628097] Re: Maverick ubiquity windows can not be resized/maximized

2010-09-25 Thread Mark Pointing
During testing of the Ubuntu 10.10 Beta CD on a 1280x800 display, not
all of the text in the slideshow is visible, and there are no handles to
scroll, and the window can not be resized. I believe this bug is still
a problem. Not a major problem however it will make ubuntu look
unprofessional to new users. The installer is their first impression.

[Bug 628097] Re: Maverick ubiquity windows can not be resized/maximized

2010-09-25 Thread Dave Efflandt
I just download/installed 64-bit 10.10 beta today and have same issue as
Mark booting CD live with defaults on 1080p HDTV (1920x1080) then
installing from there. I didn't really notice anything with the other
windows, but the text slideshow during install was chopped off on the
right. I could not tell how many characters were missing from other
lines, but note at bottom said The installation will finish s (the
soon was chopped off).

So even using default font size, there is some issue with the install
window width or word wrap.

But I was impressed that when I manually selected to put / on a usb
drive, it automatically defaulted to putting grub on that drive.

2010-09-08 Thread Erick Brunzell
First of all I apologize in advance for rudely subscribing Evan but I
hope this ultimately saves him time.

I was doing some unrelated testing today and I notice the window sizes
look much better, especially regarding the slideshow.

I'd say all of the window sizes are at least acceptable so I'm tempted
to say we could close this bug report.

Perhaps though we should wait until at least the RC?

[Bug 628097] Re: Maverick ubiquity windows can not be resized/maximized

2010-09-03 Thread Tom Pino
The eye strain caused by this tiny window, even on by 1440x900 monitor,
was uncomfortable to say the least.

I also have 2 drives with 24 partitions counting swap.

That window needs to be full screen.

This is a new installer, I understand that, out with the old and so
forth. It is never, however, a good idea to through the baby out with
the bath water.
