I tried several times on Ubuntu 12.04, with Unity2D 5.12, Gedit 3.4.1 and gvfs 1.12.1, and it seems fixed! This has affected me on every Ubuntu since 9.04 at least. Working with remote files through sftp was a PITA. It was one of the reasons for me to end up using Kate. Kate doesn't use GVFS, so it won't hang, just reconnects when needed. It is still an issue.
