[Bug 633485] Re: fan always run

2010-10-04 Thread Fred van Zwieten
Let me add some extra info on this for others searching the bug
database. Because we are now on 2.6.35 we have rudimentary power
management for ATI cards using the open source xorg ati driver. See
http://wiki.x.org/wiki/RadeonFeature at the end. I have changed the
profile from default to low and have a quiet laptop again.

[Bug 633485] Re: fan always run

2010-10-01 Thread Fred van Zwieten
OK, found the problem. I have an ati card in my laptop. If you don't
install the closed source driver, you do not have power management, so
the gpu is running full speed and get's hot, resulting in the fan
problem. Too bad plymouth doesn't handle flglx too well, but I can
live with that. I change status to invalid

apport information

** Tags added: apport-collected

** Description changed:

- I am running Maverick with all updates. A few seconds after starting
- Maverick, the fan in my laptop is running on high speed and making a log
- of noise. There is no process keeping the CPU busy. It keeps running on
- high speed. My laptop is a HP ProBook 6540b. I'm not sure what to check
- to give you more info. I will add any output requested to bug bug, but I
- don't know what info is needed.
