This is strange. Consider the following parts of the log: (Reading database ... 151254 files and directories currently installed.) Removing firebird2.1-classic ... Purging configuration files for firebird2.1-classic ... Processing triggers for ureadahead ... ureadahead will be reprofiled on next reboot Log ended: 2010-09-04 13:58:03 (classic not mentioned in-between) Log started: 2010-09-04 20:39:05 (Reading database ... 151314 files and directories currently installed.) Removing firebird2.1-classic ... dpkg: error processing firebird2.1-classic (--remove): subprocess installed pre-removal script returned error exit status 1 Isn't it strange? The package is successfully removed and purged at 13:58, but then removed again in 20:39. Besides, there is a possibility of failure in preinst if there are active Firebird connections.
