This is a warning and not an error, so it's harmless. will only fix /var/lib/dpkg/available. Invalid entries in /var/lib/dpkg/status
will still cause warnings.
In my case, the invalid entry was virtualbox-2.1:

'virtualbox-2.1':
error in Version string '2.1.4-42893_Ubuntu_intrepid': invalid character in
