[Bug 640058] Re: [xorg-edgers] X server crash with intel driver when using shadow option
Hello, Since some weeks, maybe months (I can't tell you exactly because I did not put attention to it as it was not often enough) the X server still crashes and I am returned to the login screen. I was surprised yesterday because I could reproduce the problem by clicking on a link on a specific site and the X server would crash at each time. So I ran again glxinfo and again each time, X server crashes: the Xorg.log file shows it is a segmentation fault. I could generate an crash file but apport can't upload it: first because apport uses glxinfo and second because if not using glxinfo (by temporarily renaming it) it displays the following message The program crashed on an assertion failure, but the message could not be retrieved. Apport does not support reporting these crashes. with the title Problem in xserver-xorg-core, probably because as you said ubuntu-bug won't upload a bug report on an unofficial package version. Her attached you can find the Xorg log file which shows the backtrace. ** Attachment added: Xorg.0.log.old https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-intel/+bug/640058/+attachment/2230933/+files/Xorg.0.log.old -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/640058 Title: [xorg-edgers] X server crash with intel driver when using shadow option To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-intel/+bug/640058/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 640058] Re: [xorg-edgers] X server crash with intel driver when using shadow option
New versions since 30 Sept: xserver-xorg-video-intel: 2:2.12.902+git20100929.d4c013cb-0ubuntu0sarvatt2~lucid libdrm-intel1: 2.4.22+git20100929.624e58e3-0ubuntu0sarvatt~lucid libkms1: 2.4.22+git20100929.624e58e3-0ubuntu0sarvatt~lucid uname -a: Linux jmp-desktop 2.6.32-24-generic #43-Ubuntu SMP Thu Sep 16 14:17:33 UTC 2010 i686 GNU/Linux I set the option Shadow at True in the xorg.conf and shutdown and restarted the machine. Then I tested glxinfo: there is no crash anymore! glxinfo | grep direct rendering: YES celestia (1.6.0): no crash also but once launched it is slow: after celestia has launched and displayed the welcome message, top shows that the process celestia-gnome takes all the cpu available, e.g. 95% of the cpu, even when I do nothing in celestia. In celestia, If I move the mouse pointer (a cross) from the main graphics window to the File menu option, the pointer takes about 1 to 4 seconds to change to the arrow shape. RIght now, alt-tab from my typing this comment, to celestia takes about 4 seconds. celestia Help / OpenGL info says: Vendor: Mesa Project Renderer: Software Rasterizer Version: 2.1 Mesa 7.10-devel Max simultaneous textures: 8 Max texture size: 4096 It seems the shadow option do not accelerate anything ? -- [xorg-edgers] X server crash with intel driver when using shadow option https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/640058 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 640058] Re: [xorg-edgers] X server crash with intel driver when using shadow option
Yeah, it's expected that you'll get software rendering with that option turned on. It's a safe mode that can't use OpenGL. Now that it correctly uses software rendering instead of crashing, I'll mark this as fixed. ** Changed in: xserver-xorg-video-intel (Ubuntu) Status: New = Fix Released -- [xorg-edgers] X server crash with intel driver when using shadow option https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/640058 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 640058] Re: [xorg-edgers] X server crash with intel driver when using shadow option
Hello, No I have not a second machine. I will use https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Backtracing Backtrace with gdb to produce the backtrace, but if you have any recommandation to give I will use them. [Bug 640058] Re: [xorg-edgers] X server crash with intel driver when using shadow option
I thought I could use the backtrace with gdb above even without logging in from a remote machine but it seems this is not possible. In the gdb session, after you attached to the process, typed continue and typed ctrl-alt-f7 to go to the gui screen, the machine freezes completely. However I recalled that I did produce a crash file three days ago by running sudo service apport start force_start=1. However I could not upload it, and I don't know why (may be too big ? it was a 3MB gzipped size) As I since downloaded the three .dbg packages (xserver-xorg-core-dbg, xserver-xorg-video-intel-dbg and libgl1-mesa-dri-gdb), I ran again the above command, and I could produce a second crash file. I don't know if the crash file generation procedure uses them and if it will be useful. The gzipped size is now 4MB ... I hope the upload will work... ** Attachment added: _usr_bin_Xorg.0.crash.gz https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-intel/+bug/640058/+attachment/1609969/+files/_usr_bin_Xorg.0.crash.gz -- [xorg-edgers] X server crash with intel driver when using shadow option https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/640058 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 640058] Re: [xorg-edgers] X server crash with intel driver when using shadow option
Yeah, ubuntu-bug won't upload a bug report on an unofficial package version. It also gathers and attaches the output of glxinfo in its graphics-related bug reports, so it's pretty useless when the bug report is glxinfo crashes X. :) Do you have a machine to SSH into the affected system from? I can supply instructions for collecting a gdb backtrace of the crash over SSH. -- [xorg-edgers] X server crash with intel driver when using shadow option https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/640058 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
