[Bug 64487] Re: Usplash in edgy results in out of range error
Now that Aleksander Blomskøld also confirmed that the bug is fixed and no one else has written that they experienced the contrary, I took the liberty to close this bug. [Bug 64487] Re: Usplash in edgy results in out of range error
I had usplash not work from a clean install of Xubuntu Gutsy on a Gateway Solo 9300. When X started the screen would work, but it was blank for about a minute between grub and login. [Bug 64487] Re: Usplash in edgy results in out of range error
Same problem with Edgy and SiS video. The LCD complains of a 86.6Hz vertical refresh (its limit is 75). Dapper used to use too low a resolution and it looked a little ugly. This is much worse. I tried work around this by not using usplash, but an update overwrote Grub's menu.lst and turned it on again. -- Usplash in edgy results in out of range error https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/64487 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 64487] Re: Usplash in edgy results in out of range error
The default 'if all else fails' resolution for the ubuntu usplash theme is 640x400, which is unsupported by my monitor. If I swap the order of the themes so 640x480 comes first then I get a splash (although it looks a bit messy -- tested by sudo usplash -c). [Bug 64487] Re: Usplash in edgy results in out of range error
See https://help.ubuntu.com/community/USplashCustomizationHowto. Apparently in Edgy, usplash now "uses the resolution of the [splash] image without checking whether your display supports it". [Bug 64487] Re: Usplash in edgy results in out of range error
OK, I found out why it was only working during shutdown. I had linux-386 installed and grub now chooses that kernel to boot if it's installed. update-initramfs was only updating the ramdrive for the linux-generic kernel. So after removing the linux-386 kernel, I found that changing usplash.conf so that it runs at 1024x768 allows usplash to work at boot and shutdown. -- Usplash in edgy results in out of range error https://launchpad.net/bugs/64487 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 64487] Re: Usplash in edgy results in out of range error
The usplash.conf trick didn't work for me. X runs at 1280x1024, and that was what was originally in /etc/usplash.conf. I tried 1024x768, 800x600, 640x480, and 720x400 (which is what the text console apparently runs at). I tried doing sudo update-initramfs -u and sudo dpkg-reconfigure usplash. During shutdown, usplash will usually appear. The only case where it doesn't is for the 1280x1024 case. During startup, I have been unable to get usplash to ever appear. The monitor is a Dell E171FP and the video card is a Radeon RV200 QW [Radeon 7500], again connected via a VGA cable. I believe something's up with detection of the monitor's refresh rate, because unless I manually specify VertRefresh=60 in /etc/X11/xorg.conf, X will attempt to run at 75 hz (though the monitor can handle this). Attached will be the output from running [EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ sudo get-edid 2>get-edid.txt | parse-edid > parse-edid.txt -- Usplash in edgy results in out of range error https://launchpad.net/bugs/64487 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 64487] Re: Usplash in edgy results in out of range error
I can confirm this in Edgy on both an old Celeron 300 with a Voodoo Banshee card and on a P4 with SiS video. I'm not sure what resolution and refresh rate it's trying to use, but the first system's monitor is a CRT limited to 800x600 @ 60 Hz. The second system uses an LCD monitor connected via VGA, which goes up to 1024x768 @ 75 Hz. My main system at home is connected by DVI and does not experience this issue. Both systems experiencing this issue switch to usable settings once X starts. -- Usplash in edgy results in out of range error https://launchpad.net/bugs/64487 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
