This is just plain wrong to set auto-login by default. As a moderator on the forums, we find the last thing a user does when updating is read the release notes, even though are links to them in the install process . There A few hardware combinations that don't work properly when installing Unity, they get a white screen, or corrupted graphics. By setting auto-login by default, the user doesn't have a chance to select the gnome-desktop if Unity doesn't work. When Unity doesn't work, the gnome-desktop is needed to help the user troubleshoot their problems. Asking a new user to boot in recovery mode, then navigate to /etc/gdm, and delete /etc/gdm/custom.conf just so they can boot a different session may be asking a bit much of them. It is easy enough to enable auto-login after the install is complete and working properly.
