*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 659024 *** https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/659024 I have the same problem in 12.04 (lubuntu). aumix is important since I am using the i3 window manager where I have to use a command-line tool or a GUI tool independent of the desktop to control multimedia settings.
