Works for me as well with Kubuntu 10.10, KDE 4.5.1 and Kate 3.5.1 @BlaDe39 did you try to update of this version of Kate? Screenshow showing this bug. Kate is working under gnome. I set up it from standart ubuntu repository. Version of Ubuntu: 10.04 LTS Version of kate: Kate Version 3.4.2 Using KDE Development Platform 4.4.2 (KDE 4.4.2) P.S.
