ok, I've delved a little deeper into this, and it appears to be happening on recordings that show the 1080 icon in mythtv. This leads me to believe that this computer might not be up to playing HD recordings as it is currently setup. It appears this crash (at least on the backend pc, I haven't checked the others) was being caused by a Playback Profile that included the use of XvMC.
