I ran into it when attempting to install rabbitmq-server on an EC2 host with a temporary hostname that did not resolve. Just in case this helps I fixed the problem by doing : sudo aptitude purge rabbitmq-server sudo aptitude install rabbitmq-server I think this is related to the Ubuntu package being broken under some conditions.
