This has to be closed as most of the problems have been solved. The
sound and video issues disappeared with versions *.23 of the kernel and
alsa, The DVD problem was due to my ignorance about having to install
some additional libraries. However, the loudspeakers/headphones issue
has been reported in at least 5 bugs, most of which have been aliased
with 565685. Unfortunately, poor 565685 has not seen any development for
quite a while.
