I was speaking about the texworks authors (and not the texmaker one's) :
this fork uses texworks code and i don't see any credits for the
texworks authors in the "about" dialog.

[Bug 670873] Re: TexMakerX package for Ubuntu

2010-11-04 Thread jones.79
Well, my texmakerx about dialog pays full credit to Pascal Brachet,
the maker of texmaker. He is mentioned even before the
texmakerx devs.

--
TexMakerX 2.0 (SVN 1413)
Using Qt-Version 4.6.2, compiled with QT 4.6.2
Copyright (c) (original TexMaker) 2004-2010 by Pascal Brachet
TexMakerX: Benito van der Zander, Jan Sundermeyer, Daniel Braun
---

And if you take a complete look at the reviews on the
texmakerx' sourceforge page, you can see that there has been a lot
of flaming and that there are lots of negative reviews that are the same
as well. So I guess this is not really very meaningful.

Well, I can just speak for me, but my comment for sure comes
from texmakerx' fan. So far I guess you are completly right.
Who else should write comments here to get texmakerx into
Ubuntu's repo?
People that do not like texmakerx and that just want to flame it? ;)

So, to all others, if my opinion is not objective, go ahead and give
texmakerx a try yourself.

[Bug 670873] Re: TexMakerX package for Ubuntu

2010-11-04 Thread Jakeb
This bug report looks like just advertising for an other soft (Is it a
very friendly action?)

Remarks :
- the official presentation of this soft doesn't say clearly that texmakerx is
a fork of texmaker and we don't know exactly what are the difference between
the fork and the original program;
- I've take a look at the sources of this fork : a very large majority of the
code seem to come come from another softs (texmaker, texworks, kile, ...);
- i don't see credits for the texworks authors in the "about" dialog;
- there are no credits and reference to the GPL license in the head of some
.cpp and .h files;
- if the name "texmaker" has been copyrighted by the author of the original
program (i don't know personally), using a name like "texmakerx" and a very
similar logo could provide some legal troubles;
- i can see that the editor is based on the qcoodeedit library and not on the
standard Qt textedit component. According to the bug tracker on sourceforge,
it seems that a lot of bugs really come from this library.
- i take a look at the qcodeedit web page : this library seems to be abandoned
since july 2009 and was designed for C/C++ source editing with only utf-8 and
iso8859-1 encoding support.
- i also take a look at the reviews on sourceforge : i could see the same
positive review dozens of times...

I think that this report and some comments from fan are not really
objective.

Jake.

This is schematic and extremely unfriendly opinion without any validity.
We know this type "opinion" well. This is exactly what the author of the
Texmaker spreads. He is piqued about the fork or I do not know. I do not
care this person.

TexMakerX is a really good software.

And I do not want to "fight" you. If you do not like it, do not use it.

[Bug 670873] Re: TexMakerX package for Ubuntu

2010-11-04 Thread jones.79
I use TexMakerX and Ubuntu 10.04 and can confirm the program is working
fine.

The developers respond to bug-trackers very fast and provide patches
within a short time range.

If you compare Olympus Tex' comment to some of the negative ratings on
TexMakerX' sourceforge page http://sourceforge.net/projects/texmakerx/
you can see that he posted it there multiple times and copypasted it from
there.
I just hope that this flaming does not continue here.

[Bug 670873] Re: TexMakerX package for Ubuntu

2010-11-04 Thread Olympus TeX
Texmakerx is a buggy (just take a look at the bug tracker) and unstable fork of
the original Texmaker LaTeX editor. This fork is based on a buggy and
unmaintained library (QCodeEdit). This fork uses intentionally almost the same
name, the same logo and even the same version number to make confusion with the
original program (which also provides interactive spell checking!!).
Of course, forking is a right and can be a good thing, but using intentionally
the same name and the same logo is not very compliant with the open sources
rules.

** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: workrave

  "TexMakerX is a platform-independent LaTeX editor. It provides interactive
spell checking, code folding and extended text navigation, while it also
includes the features of the LaTeX editor Texmaker, like wizards, code
completion and syntax highlighting"
  https://sourceforge.net/projects/texmakerx/

- I made a PPA for TexMakerX (, nowadays also for SVN versions, because we wait
for the release):
+ I created a PPA for TexMakerX (I made the latest SVN version available,
because the stable release is coming soon):
  https://launchpad.net/~blahota/+archive/texmakerx/

- In the TexMakerX forum there is a topic, that it would be a good idea if this
program would be the part of Ubuntu, officially
- (from Netty).
+ In the TexMakerX forum there is a topic, that it would be a good idea if
+ the latest version of this program would be available from the Ubuntu
+ repositories in Natty.

  With this report I would like to attract your attention to this
  software.
