Having a similar problem, on Acer 8204. Screen is very dim and plugging/unplugging makes no difference. This will most likely be hardware dependent - some laptops will work and some won't. I still have the screen dimming problem with Gutsy. I have not tried Hardy to still if the problem exists there still, but I have the current Hardy LiveCD downloading atm to test. Cannot confirm this on a Dell C610 in Hardy Alpha 5. Screen dims. How much it dims is also set in BIOS. I have this exact same issue on my Lenovo 3000 N100. I checked in gconf and all of the settings seem appropriate and i set the dim level to 50 percent so that it would be very noticeable. Still no luck.
