Public bug reported:

I have a VMWare Virtual Machine running Lucid and after a Kernel update
from

Linux 2.6.32-25-generic #44-Ubuntu SMP Fri Sep 17 20:05:27 UTC 2010
x86_64 GNU/Linux

to

Linux squeeze 2.6.32-25-server #45-Ubuntu SMP Sat Oct 16 20:06:58 UTC
2010 x86_64 GNU/Linux

the system no longer boots. The output on the screen is

Kernel panic - not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-
block (0,0)

The system's root partition is /dev/mapper/ubuntu-root, but the boot
process says that doesn't exist. It prints out a list of valid
partitions, but the list is empty.

** Affects: linux (Ubuntu)
     Importance: Undecided
         Status: New
