I can confirm this - it also make console logins impossible without doing a reboot and removing the splash options. Moreover the ability to press alt + F1 (or F2 or F3) to dismiss the boot up graphics during boot is also not present. (As it is in every other distribution). Try removing "splash" or adding "vga=0x31a" in /boot/grub/menu.lst in the line starting with "# defoptions=quiet splash", then do sudo update- grub and restart.
